Could any of you kind souls clarify? I know for a fact only that the S2 is almost perfectly “tube”, the S2+ has a U-shaped tailcap, and the S3 apparently has a stainless steel bezel and the new body easily accepts protected batteries, but that’s it.
So far I’ve gone from preferring the S2 to liking the S3 more, since all the 18650’s I have are protected, the S2 platform frequently has issues with the size of those, and I really, REALLY don’t have the dosh to buy more batteries.
EDIT: Nevermind, just saw on Convoy’s store that the S2+ now has a new body that’s 18,7mm in diameter, and fits protected cells.
S3 does not have a pill; it has a solid shelf for the LED PCB to sit on.
Others are aesthetic variations. Some have deeper reflectors that others (original full-length non+ S2).
Not sure about cell compatibility. I haven’t had any issues with fitting protected cells in my S2. My S3 and my S6 are setup as triples, and both used unprotected cells only. I haven’t tried to fit a protected cell. I’ve built a couple of S2+ lights for others, and in those cases, a protected cell is a tight fit length-wise; no issues with diameter. I’ve only purchased the shortest protected cells I could find and those had the springs almost bottomed out to thread on the tailcap.
What’s a pill, and what’s a solid shelf? I’m guessing the solid shelf is a more efficient heat dissipation feature?
Hmm, seems like the deeper reflector and protected cell acceptance of the S2 will make it my pick then. I’ve never had problems with the solid ring around the tailcap switch on my C8, so for the sake of not straining the spring or crushing the battery, that seems to be it.
Pill is a removable brass (sometimes aluminum) component that holds the emitter board on one side, and the driver board on the other. It makes it easy to remove the entire assembly for modding/rebuilding/swapping components out.
The solid shelf is molded into the aluminum body of the light itself, and is intended to improve the heat transfer from the LED. I find that it makes modding a bit more difficult as you have to solder the wires in place with the components inside the light and in place. Also, a bit less versatile for building a triple-emitter light.
If you are purchasing a pre-built light from Convoy, then it won’t matter as much to you. I like my S2 a lot and I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Excellent. Modding or heat management are far from my priorities; I’m not a modder by any means, use all my torches in stock format, and for the overwhelming majority of the time I use them on the two lowest modes, no matter what torch it is.
Thanks for the tips, I’m definitely settling for the S2 then. I have the C8 already (right beside me on the desk, in fact) and I looooooove this little monster
