So we had a couple LED backlit LCD TVs at work that we replaced because the panels went dead. It was my job to harvest the motherboards and power supplies because the TVs are now obsolete and finding these parts can prove difficult or expensive - especially if we want to retain some uniformity.
Anyways, while I had these things apart, I remembered the Luminit thread, and decided I was going to harvest these LCD films as well. As I don’t really need 1400 sq. in. of this stuff laying around, I thought I’d offer up sets here to anyone interested.
So each set would consist of 4 sheets - one thick diffusing plate, two sheets of prismatic film (one vertically oriented, one horizontal), and one sheet of diffusing film.
The prismatic sheets are very interesting. With a reflector beam, it actually splits the beam into two, pointing 45 degrees away from center. With a [more] collimated beam from a Fresnel (or a laser) it actually creates a line beam.
The link below has some beam shots, first with my “Fresnel Frower” (of which build thread is in the Spotlight section) pointed at the ceiling, then some beamshots outside at a distance (and a shot of a nice rectangular hotspot at about 200m away!), and finally some beamshots at a wall that has matte and gloss paint, using a small Coast flashlight. Also is a picture of the 4 sheets.
Each sheet is about 10-1/2” x 9-1/4”. I have about 12 sets available, and I’ll ship them to anyone in the 48 contiguous states for $12 in a USPS Priority Mail envelope. If you want an additional set add $4. I’m sure a heluva lot cheaper than Luminit.

I don’t know anything about this stuff, but it seems interesting. What would it be used for, though? (other than the TV’s it came out of)
Well the diffusing film won’t be of interest to the throw crowd, but it can be of great use to the flood guys who want a more “homogenous” flood - especially with multiple emitters. Might be great for mules for use in photography as well where a “soft” light is needed. Another possibility is the blending of slightly different color bins.
As to the prismatic stuff? Not sure… if I could control the width of the linear beam somehow it would be pretty awesome.
