I have bought several off the shelf flashlights some better than others. I have always been interested in modifying and improving them but the terminology used on all these forums has been a little difficult to understand and follow along with. Between drivers, different types of bulbs, power sources, lenses… Its been quite frustrating. So im looking to see if anyone can explain in basic terms what each part is for and when each is necessary, particularly the wiring and electrical portion of the flashlights. I mostly just want to upgrade my existing lights versus build new ones from scratch. Im fairly capable working on things once I understand the concepts. Thanks for all the help!
This is a great place to start: http://flashlightwiki.com/Main_Page. Basics and Terminology sections come in real handy... Hope this helps...
Not sure of your backgrnd/skills, but you may need some decent tools and supplies. Richard's store is a great place for starters: http://mtnelectronics.com to look around.
Awsome man. Thanks for the quick reply.
Welcome to BLF
Welcome to the forum Jacef8. We've all been were you are and understand how overwhelming it seems. There is a lot going on in a light and very few deeply understand all the various systems at play. I certainly don't.
You are asking a very broad question that has many aspects. Each of which has many potential approaches and could probably be turned into a small book. I have a suggestion that may be attractive approach to you. Pick one of your lights and decide what you would like it to do better or different. Give us that info and let the conversation develop. You will probably learn a lot more having the actual light in front of you and acting on the ideas that you like.
Welcome again and hope you enjoy your time here.
yes pick one to start with. I just did my first light last week since I wanted to get into 18650’s . members here were very helpful and I’m sure you’ll be pointed in the right direction.
