DIY hidden cam detector

While browsing for hidden cam detectors I came across this diy flashlight mod here:

Has anyone here made one or something similar, I don’t even know if it really works?
With today’s world filled with hidden cameras it would be interesting to see who’s trying to watch you.
The actual mod in the link a sort of bulky but it’d be nice to have a keychain sized detector.

BTW, I’m new here and wanted to thank everyone for making this such a great place for the flashlight enthusiast!

Interesting. Wonder if it’s legit. Sounds awkward to use, but it would be cool to know why it works.

Welcome aboard THE_dAY.

Welcome to BLF!

Looking at this product, it appears to use a red filter for viewing, and red LEDs. You could make something smaller quite easily but I doubt it would work with cameras that have anti-reflective coating on the lens.

Thanks for the kind welcome.

I didn’t know anti reflective coating would render this useless.
Still I have an empty roll of toilet paper and some Lee Filters (red filter paper) so I’ll try this later when I’m aware/around of a hidden camera I can test it on.

If you have a light with AR lens you can try it out, see if the red light reflects?

Welcome aboard THE_dAY, would like to know how this works out if you attempt it. I wonder how hidden camera’s would react to 3000 lumens of light directed back at em? Just a thought. Wonder if there’s a radio signal that would jam the filming attempt? A walking laser light show perhaps? lol But seriously, would there be a radio signal that would cause static or rolling in a typical security camera? Walking around emitting an invisible signal, defeating video within a couple hundred feet, would make you “the invisible man/woman”.

One can wear a hat with some nice IR smd leds around the hat band, that would blind many security cameras at night.
People have done that to protest against filming of public places.
Besides that, there is not much you can do in public space.

I would expect any decent security camera and cabling would have RF shielding. How strong would the emissions have to be? No idea but making something to cause such inteference would be illegal here. Building a portable EMP device is another idea, but would probably be illegal too.

I’m wondering how paranoid you have to be to fear hidden camera’s tbh.

If someone wants to watch me take a dump, they only have to ask and I’ll put on a show no worries

I think it’s funny, when I go into a store carrying my camera, coming off a shoot or something, and they tell me I can’t take pictures. My camera’s are obviously Pro grade and they come running out of their offices saying Oh No! Against company policy! Blah blah , what about the flip side of the coin? They can spy on me all day but I can’t take a pic? Cracks me up.

My son died 8 years ago. I take flowers to his place at the cemetary, especially on his birthday. I went into a local store that has a small flower shop area and was taking pics of them building the flower set-up I was taking to the cemetary. (Don’t like leaving the camera in the car) The manager came running out of the offices (had obviously been spying with the security cams) talking this “Against company policy” BS. You’ve got to delete those pictures out of your camera, she says. Well, I know she can’t make me do that due to Public Domain laws, but I eased her mind showing her the pics and deleting them as we walked through. She was happy. I went home and ran a recovery program and recovered the pics. No biggie. Thought about putting pics of her on a billboard to show that, yes, indeed I CAN take pics in her store! I’ve only been shopping in that store for 50 years, jeez! People get a bit carried away sometimes. This new Google Glass thing is gonna be epic in the trouble it causes.

Your experience in the flower shop is partly why I got my Canon S95 (small and plain black) instead of a DSLR. I thought I would use it to take a lot of photos outside and even though we have surveillance cameras everywhere, I’ve seen photographers get a lot of hassle from security staff etc. about taking photos.

Its all about control, they beleive they are more powerful then you so what they say goes, but you can’t do the same because your considered a small insignificant peon

Maybe they would change their tune, if you said they were on television (hidden camera).

you know what happens in the wild when an outsider comes along and tries to assert dominance

Live, from the corner grocery, it’s DB with WECU Channel 2. The manager is stomping the privacy rights of individuals as they shop in this store by invading the very bathroom stalls with security cameras….more at 11!

Either the outsider gets squashed or things change in the wild. Ask Geronimo.

Young male lions are cast out, they live on their own and build strength to come back and kick the Kings rear, taking over the pride and starting a new legacy. Happens with Gorilla’s, Elephants, all over the animal kingdom. The strong survive. So, if I was a serious troublemaker I could challenge with public domain, rally a large number of people to boycott the store that caused me issue and overthrow their company policy, even shut them down. That does indeed happen sometimes. But of course, I just wanted the flowers so I could mourn in peace.

People are going postal all over the world because the greater powers are pushing harder and harder. It’s no surprise really when you look at the lawbooks that even the lawmakers don’t understand. Power seeks more power, and the weak gather to rise up. Constant struggle and the way of all things living.

So, chew gum and carry a straw. (so you can splat the “hidden” camera’s and make it difficult for “the man” to reign supreme! lol

Pre-9/11, there were very few places where you couldn't claim Public Domain and take photos.

Interestingly (or not) malls and banks were some of the only public places that could legally stop you from filming/photographing.

Ookie dookie… I’ll be there in a bit… J)

Absolute Power CORRUPTS absolutely!!! Just look at the current administration!!!

Here in California we have red light cameras, TOTALLY unconstitutional in the USA we have the right to face our accuser’s, how can one face a red light in court??? Well, Cali makes their traffic laws citations and not criminal accusations so our 6th amendment does not apply!!! Just another revenue generator for a TOTALLY corrupt Govt. Like my 12 year old Ford F250 super duty, my tags this year are $308.00!!!

I’d prefer to put that in my house. Sometimes you hear strange noises at night. You might be thinking about leaves and other stuff. But it could be someone else…!
