night vision or a ghetto night vision has been a mystry to me .
we see visible light..
infrared is used to see in the dark ?
i have nexus 5 and i checked wiht remote and i was able to see its light blinking .. and when i illumiated it very close 10 mm to a a newspaper i could see the writings .
does this means if i buy some infrared leds then i will be able to see in the night with my nexus .. ?
i have a bunch of zoom lights usign cree q5 . or xp. tail end current is .7 amps. can i just replace its led with infrared led ? though it wont be ideal but it wont damage the led as i hope its (the driver ) current source not volgate source ..
High power IR flashlights are popular with nighttime hunters. Yes, you can indeed see in the dark with a powerful IR flashlight and a camera that is sensitive to IR. Either a black & white camera or a color camera with it’s IR filter removed. In color cameras, IR alters colors and focus so its necessity to block much of the IR with an IR cut filter in order to get a good color image.
850nm IR leds will give the most light / brightest image on a camera. But 850nm has a slight red visible glow to human eyes. 940nm IR leds are invisible to human eyes but cameras are less sensitive to it / less brightness on camera. IR leds on ebay For the best IR leds you need to get osram oslon or led-engin IR leds.
any sony 0lux camcorder ses IR, i still keep mine 8mm tape one, even thou it is very outdated, but sony does not make consumer grade 0lux cams anymore, so it is either 5k and up pro cam, or old tape cam.
$3 How is that for budget? Google Cardboard with Head Mount No, I’m actually serious. Add some foam to seal it nicely around your face (hardware store thick “open cell” / soft weather stripping). Not only for comfort but to keep light from leaking out. Just need a IR flashight. I’d go for an custom oslon black led light mounted right to the goggles. Paint the cardboard black, to look less like cardboard and for water resistance.
If you want the best performance you need to remove the camera’s IR filter.
they sell the cameras on ebay with filters removed, etc.
this is a related topic but not quite what OP is asking.
where are the good budget IR security cameras in china ?
i need some that are disquised and / or hard to detect
by intruders

I’m big into UAVs and drones and love flying at night so I’ve got quite a bit of expeirence with Night/Low light setups. There good enough to pilot a drone through at high speeds with nothing more than moonlight. I’ve never had to use a IR illuminator with any of these setups and really arent needed unless you are going to a location that has absolutely no light like deep into a cave…
I definatly would recommend these following cameras.
And throw one of these lenses on there to really boost performance. Light Collector
Another thing to consider is the latency of the camera alot have a fairly high lag and depending on your purpose you don’t want that. The sony’s are all damn near real time.
I’m at work right now and cant link any videos but when I get home I’ll dig one up so you can see how these perform and if they will meet your needs.
