Does anyone know of a good COMBINATION flashlight?

Your negative attitude really shines through. “Nobody cares what you’re reading on Amazon and we don’t want to know!”

I’m not bound and determined to buy from a big box store. It’s just that it turns out those are the places that have something in the realm of what I’m looking for. If you want to find a bear in the woods, fine. Then get the right type of flashlight for that. The flashlight I’m looking for, is a combination light, like it or not. And yes, the Might D Light WAS a flashlight. You can turn just the flashlight head on and use it as a flashlight. For an average homeowner, it was a great light. Though you might scoff at that, I’d like to see your straight Mag or other straight flashlights give a soft all encompasing flood light or give light where you need it if you’re hanging it from a tree. It can’t because the head doesn’t pivot and they give bright spot light that causes harsh shadows making it difficult to work on your car at night. Like I said, if you want to go find bears… fine. Just get the right light to do that with. If you’re doing stuff around the house, then a combo light comes in handy.

Thank you for alerting me that the Amazon reviews are all worthless. Good to know. No sense in buying something with good ratings then. That’s out the window, right?

I already have a headlight, which is why I never asked about one.

200 lumens on a bigger flashlight gave a decent light. I was at Harbor Freight to look at the Braun 500 lumen stick light, and though admittedly it wasn’t dark inside the store and didn’t have my Might D Light to compare side by side, I wasn’t impressed with the Braun light output. I’m tempted to say my 200 lumen old one put out as much light as that did. I was impressed with the 2500 lumen from the Husky brand at HD, but it’s got some flagrant downfalls. It’s too long (just guessing 15 to 18 inches long) so you can’t get it into tighter places like if you’re working on a car, plus it has 2 strong magnets at BOTH ends. You’re likely to mess your car up if you do that. And the fact that it swivels at the magnets…why would you need one on each end??? It’s just flagrant waste of length and weight and cost, and will cause more trouble down the road when it clings to a delicate part on the car engine.

Though you say you have to buy 2 lights if you want 2 things, Lowes has their 1000 lumen light that gives soft lighting on the length of the handle area and a spot flashlight. Sure, it can’t do either as well as a dedicated work or spot light, but it does have both on the same light, it’s $35, and comes with a “no hassle” lifetime warranty. I haven’t seen it yet, I heard the downfall is that it gets REAL hot in turbo mode, and it looks to only be 6 inches long which leads me to believe it can’t give a nice spread of light like the bigger Might D light could, but it sounds promising for what I need.

But…you don’t want to hear about all that low class big box store stuff. So tell me, what ya got better than that? I’m all ears.

I took a quick look at that by doing a google search which only brought up one light. It was a straight light. No pivot head = it can’t be pointed to where I need it if doing yard work, etc.

I think the type of lighting that you’re looking for falls under the category known as “Worklights”. Since BLF is an enthusiast lighting forum, worklights are rarely discussed here.

However, many of the manufacturers and vendors discussed on BLF do market lighting under that category, you just have to do the searching. To help you along, I would suggest looking at https://www.batteryjunction.com/ which carries many manufacturers for both enthusiests and non-enthusiests, and even categorizes what they carry, including worklights. They have many traditional flashlights with swivel heads at reasonable price points. I personally like the Nitecore MT21C Multi-Task Adjustable Head Flashlight at ~$60.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for in the Worklight category, try some of the others, or use the website to help you further search the internet. I hope that helps!

You can disagree with my opinion all you want, go nuts.

Here’s another candidate for you.

Thanks for the info on that light. Too bad they don’t make these bigger. While having a small light is convenient, they just can’t give the spread of light that a bigger head can give. From the looks of it, it seems the flash is two 1/2 inch diode bulbs totaling 1 1/4 inches wide x 1/2 inch high. The Might D Light soft lighting was about 4 or 5 inches long x maybe 1 1/2 inches wide. Sometimes it’s not about power, but about light spread.

1 Thank

Have you opened up your old light to see if you can just replace the internal cells?

That is a great idea, and as basic as that was, the answer is no I hadn’t thought of it. Thank you for that. I might end up doing just that. As I was looking around, I was hoping to find something more powerful though. The 2500 lumen light from Home Depot is pretty impressive but it’s ridiculously long at over 19 inches and magnets on both ends. I guess it’s made pretty much just for car mechanics.

Though this isn’t a flashlight, this was very interesting and can do a lot of different things… Amazon.com

Additionally, Klein tools has a nice light that has both flood and spot but it’s $100.
