Oh, dear… blue penguins of death?
Microsoft has relied on Linux and other free software for a long time. For example, the reason why Windows’ network code functions is because it was copied from BSD. And the company’s web sites are served through Linux-based content distribution networks (seriously, tell nmap to detect the OS of www.microsoft.com, and it’ll say the site is running Linux). And last I checked, their webmail service runs on BSD. They’ve built a cloud computing platform which is designed to run Linux virtual machines. Etcetera.
All it means is that there are some domains where free software “won”, meaning that it’s not cost-effective to even try to build and maintain a closed-source alternative. Microsoft isn’t stupid; not all wheels are profitable to reinvent.
