Dongrui All-920

Thanks agedbriar I'll make note of that. I did notice my pill was just slightly loose (maybe someone already focused it), but I tightened it.

-Garry

I too am impatiently waiting for the Jacob A60.

Garry, I forgot to mention.

I have also thought of applying thermal paste on the entire lenght of pill threads, but decided to do that only at the top, so as not to compromise electrical contact.

Not shure if that was a necessary precaution, though, since the pill is now tightened.

Well I gave the Super Tactics a little test drive. Got scared at first that I had a D.O.A. after I dropped in a battery and it didn't come on, but then it dawned on me "flat top battery". So I switched to a Trustfire Flame 2400mAh. Beam was very very ringy. I unscrewed the pill a bit and with some trial and error tried to get the best focus. It still has quite a few rings in it. Aiming at a close white wall the beam is much more "cool white" than the Dongrui. The Dongrui looked to have a purplish tint to it which I never noticed before. The Dongrui seems more perfectly focused with very few rings and a tighter (more focused) spot to it. Spot size at a close white wall (+/- 5 feet) seemed very close in size.

I did some beam/throw comparisons although the sun was beginning to come up. Both seemed to equally light up a tree line at 250', but the Dongrui has a slightly larger hotspot (maybe 3 to 5 feet wider at that 250 feet distance). The Dongrui did seem a little "dimmer" I think due to the tint difference.

Measured tailcap current on the Super Tactics with the TF Flame 2400 @ 3.98v:
Hi-1.60A
Med-0.75A
Low-0.15A

Seems mine isn't driven as hard! I'm a bit disappointed. Oh well, Chinese lottery I guess. So for me the Dongrui wins as far as "output" is concerned. When it comes to build quality, the Super Tactics is superior.

-Garry

And no, I didn't get into that Dongrui's pill yet.

1.60A at 3.98V seems similar to mine, perhaps more.

Try with a battery freshly charged to 4.18V, and you should get the expected 1.70-1.75A.

This light isn't driven as hard as your Dongrui sample, which, at 1.96A, is overdone IMO.

Ok, I thought it was supposed to be closer to 2A, but I didn't search back to check. Is the beam of yours very ringy? Even after focusing?

-Garry

No rings here.

If not optimally focused, I get some corona, but never rings (AFAIR).

You may also try to optimize with a shim of thin cardboard between reflector bottom and original plastic insulator around the emitter. That's what made it for me, but I have replaced the plastic reflector with an aluminium one (C8) from Manafont. Due to temperature only.

Anyway, being a thrower, you should evaluate its beam quality at distances above 10m.

I'm saying this because now I can see a ring at 3m from white wall. Wink

Ok, my "focusing" was very very quickly done so it could need more adjusting. What I did was unscrew the pill slightly and then screw the head on and adjust the head on and off to see check for a best focus point and then make the necessary adjustments to the pill so that the head was tightened at that point. Again, I did this in a rush and perhaps it could be fine-tuned. It also seems like the emitter in mine is not quite centered in the dome (is that even possible?).

I just noticed the Dongrui All-920 has been pulled from the MF website and the New Arrivals page is showing what appears to be the same light without the Dongrui branding. The light still has the orignal reviews from the Dongrui light now, including GarryBunk's...

Has anyone tried installing a C8 pill into this light? The pill design looks similar from the photos...

Interesting. Probably the same exact light I have since mine is unbranded too. Darn! Now I can't find it by searching "Dongrui"!

-Garry

Which is why I posted it here, on your thread, where anyone interested would be able to easily locate the new SKU! Cool

I helps where I can...

Added new beamshots with comparison to the Super Tactics to the end of the original post.

-Garry

The reflector on this is the same size as almost all Chinese flashlights, 41-42mm x 31-32mm, the C8 reflector.

found this

Interesting. Looks exactly like mine but XM-L. Seems a decent total price too.

I measured my Dongrui All-920 this morning and I got about a 20cm hotspot at 3m. This light seems to perform very similar to the Jacob A60.

Garry,

You've had the Dongrui for some time now. How well does the Q5 take those 2A from battery? For how long do you usually keep it on High? How is heatsinking?

I'm asking since I'm still reluctant to let my rather poorly heatsinked Jacob A60 run above 1.75A. That means taking care about which battery I use.

I honestly haven't used it much at all except when I went underground with it. There I purposely ran it on high for 5 to 10 minutes at a time (I would set it up aimed where I wanted it and then take some time getting the camera propped up and the photo taken - with maybe a couple tries at the photo). I was in 49 degree F ambient temperature at the time. The battery was freshly charged and either a Trustfire Flame 2400 or a Tenergy 2600 (not sure which ones were in which lights) - both of which have been good batteries and both only on their second charge cycle. I noticed the light starting to get warm on the body at the head, but never hot and never saw any problems with the light. (Perhaps never getting really hot is showing the bad heatsinking?) I figure if I burn it up it's only about $5 and some of my time to throw another XR-E in it.

I still haven't investigated the actual heatsink any further to see if it's hollow or not or if it can be beefed up at all.

Thank you Garry.

I'm afraid I missed your 5 to 10 min info in the other thread.

Perhaps I'm being too cautious with mine... Wink
