Driving Emitters Directly from DC Adapters

I’ve got a box full of salvaged switch-mode wall warts of varying specs. Say, for example, I took a 12 V, 1 A unit and connected it directly to a Nichia 519a… Would I have just trashed a lovely emitter or would the PSU hit its current limit of 1 A causing the voltage to collapse to 3 or so volts? Or perhaps the PSU might detect a short and shut down completely? Or something else? I know it’s probably a terrible idea but I’m kinda curious as to what might happen. I guess it may also depend on the specifics of the PSU circuit.

Limiting the current by lowering the voltage is a function of a charger, not a PSU. PSUs tend to keep constant voltage.

EDIT: And it’s uncertain whether PSU can shut down fast enough to save your emitter. My guess - it can’t.

I have a magnifier lamp I modified with XML2 emitters . I used a PS with 3.4v output directly to the LEDs. I’ve been using it for years (not something I leave on 24/7 but have left it on for long periods of time) PS gets hot though. If it’s spare junk experiment, that’s what it’s all about

You can of course get a 12V led (if it is a 6 or 12V led make sure it is on a 12V MCPCB). Or a quad MCPCB in series with a 3V emitter. I’m not sure what would happen with a triple in series.
