E-sig kills ....

Interesting , I would assume Li-ion powered ...

Ninth fire in the area from e-cigs, i am guessing they are cheap china models with straight 5V USB chargers, no proper charging circuitry and maybe even ultrafire batteries

that was awkward since smoke could kill you slowly but explode?

Li-ions can overheat and violently vent gas and fire. If its in a device that restricts its ability to vent, it will explode.

I personally wonder about the long term health effects of e-cigs and the chemicals, including flavorings, being inhaled into the lungs. After all it took 350+ years before the medical profession admitted that tobacco was bad for you. Are E-cigs going to turn out to be bad for users too long term in addition to the fire and explosion hazards? I doubt that they have been around long enough to be sure of anything yet. Per my understanding rigorous extended medical studies have been minimal so far.

I quit smoking at age 30 or so but still, according to my doctor, show the beginnings of Emphysema based on a recent chest X ray and that is 40 years after I stopping smoking. Someone felt cigarettes were bad long ago though as the term “Coffin nails” for cigarettes dates back to 1896 per Harpers magazine.

Man killed as e-cigarette ‘explodes’

The investigation into the cause of this fire is continuing but at this stage it is thought that the charging device being used at the time may not have been the one supplied with the e-cigarette.

I would bet money that he used the improper charger for his e-cig

If you notice…what is the glaring problem with this charger and device?

A, it’s a straight in 5vdc unregulated, un-charge controlled device…5vdc in a 4.2vdc battery…what happens if it KEEPS pushing power into that battery, heat, and heat + sealed battery = vent (controlled explosion)
a vent is usually followed by smoke, fire, and/or really nasty gasses you DON’T want to breath

The beauty of Li Ion technology and chemistry is the energy density to weight, and the ability to dump said charge quickly and efficiently (also depending on chemistry and build), it holds ALOT of power pound for pound than lead acid, NiCD or NiMH, but the caveat is it also can become temperamental and volatile in charging/discharging

This is why it’s ABSOLUTELY imperative to charge a Li Ion battery with proper charge controller circuit tied in at the proper current for the batteries (it’s rare but it does happen that this charge controller fails) usually a battery vents is due to TOO high a charge current or improper voltage feed for charging.

I wish the industry would educate people about these batteries, charged properly they pose no greater threat of venting and fire than laptops and cellphones that are charged millions of times a day all over the world, and they DID have issues with laptop batteries not too long ago and the industry pretty much took care of the problem itself for the most part (sure unscrupulus dealers still try to sell sub par devices but for the most part they have stopped)

Be safe…here is a bit of light reading for those that want to know more about Li Ion batteries

P.S. This is also the danger of these flashlights with the direct connect charge port on the side without a proper charge controller circuit anywhere in it, many are straight into the battery and if someone just plugs in a 5vdc supply it highly increases the chances of a vent, and with flashlights it’s sealed (that whole IPX rating thing) and what happens when you have an explosive in a sealed container? (think pipe bomb) NOT GOOD!

I think i’ll just stick to rice paper, tobacco and certain herbs…

I agree with Richwouldnt. The chemicals in ecig vapor are universally unhealthy even if the lion explosions are due to misuse.

I also agree with Jerommel… It is better to stick with ‘certain herbs.’

well…for someone who smoked for almost 20 years…vaping IS a miracle invention

Kind of like what Cree is to the old oil and wick lanterns  (or the old carbide mining headlights)

What 3 chemicals are in burning cigarettes?

TAR, Carbon Monoxide, and nictotine

Look at this chart…tell me what is the MOST in the analogs? Nicotine…NOPE!

http://www.econdataus.com/cigrs.html

The chemicals indivudually have been tested hundreds of times already…in fact they are ALREADY in many products you use/consume every day

What IS NOT in vaping? (please…see below)

Also do some research what Carbon Monoxide does to the ability of your blood to carry oxygen…ever wonder why they say smokers have a harder time of healing…hmmmm

I did not say smoking cigs was better than vaping, but it has been shown that vape has a lot of harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen.

From a study done in 1997 when e-cigs were in their infancy, and found in only a handful of samples AFTER they overheated them…MANY improvements have been made…by ingenious people, kind of like the improvements made here with this hobby

I didn’t say it’s better

Maybe i’ll try the E-cig business one day.

Here is a small writeup I did a while back when I started my “research” on vaping…just my take on the whole thing

All I know is Aug 1, 2013 I took a drag on my last cigarette, and started vaping, a year later, I have saved over $1500 (minus the 500ish I spent on my vaping stuff), found a new hobby in flashlights (gotta have something to put all these batteries not high enough current rated for vaping into  and I feel a MILLION times better)

TL:DR

Heres a study from June on ecigs: ” Health risks of e-cigarettes emerge”:https://www.sciencenews.org/article/health-risks-e-cigarettes-emerge

But lets not get off topic. Too many people aren’t educated on the risks that come with cheap e-cigarettes. Sticking a Li-on battery in my mouth with poorly made electronics from China is a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe governments will use this an excuse to regulate the use of ecigs?

Waaay better than dying from lung cancer
But I personally suggest cigarettes for population control

This is just my personal (recent) experience, but…

I was a pipe smoker for many years, then about 9 months ago, I stopped cold.

Then, I was away from here for awhile, and where I was was over on some of the e-cig forums, because I “got into” e-cigs, and started using them for awhile (maybe 2 months or so), and during that period was vaping almost exclusively 0% nicotine.

I stopped the vaping after about 2 months, because I started developing a really bad cough that I just could not get rid of, even for months after stopping vaping.

I am NOT saying that the cough was from the vaping… I just don’t know, but now, about 3 months after stopping the vaping, the cough is pretty much gone.

I can’t understand vapers lol, nothing gives the pleasure of real cigarettes
