I thought that’s something to explore, so did a pill with 7x7135 (no more, no less of 7135’s) and XP-E2 R4. Also, did some tests and got best results with liquid metal thermal compound and 2,35amps of tailcap current. Measured the intensity and got 81 250cd! Nice torch, throws etc. the focus head part should be tighter.
But, actually, where this XP-E2 really shines is the old Dereelight Nightmaster v1, I put the new pill there, measured throw and got numbers of 265 800cd (281 000cd peak). Wow, that’s more like it! I think this is going to be my current pocket thrower in use. 8)
Combination is further optimized with the use of Samsung INR18650-25R giving 2,1-2,4amps for a longer time.
In the picture: Thrunite TN32 (I hold on the similar thoughts that this is an awesome stock light, simply unprecedended for the price), NMv1 and Samsung INR18650-25R.
Candelas are measured from 5m and converted to 1m.
Excellent. I’m keen on hearing your experiences, I assume its 50mm lens too. It is nice to push illumination a bit further
I selected a best of three XP-E2 R4 after dedoming, flow soldering etc. And I got 10-20% better results with liquid metal thermal compound as compared to 16W/mK thermal grease.
I'm curious about the liquid metal you used. Did some searching and found Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra sold in a few places (on amazon), pricey of course for a small amt ($13.50 for 1.4 oz.). Sounds like you need to stay away from aluminum because it reacts with it - not a problem for copper MCPCB's on copper or brass pills. Another thing would be to be sure you got smooth flat surfaces - a surface flaw of slight indentation will make it useless -- I've gotten burned by pill tops like that before.
Interesting you saw 10-20% improvements with it. It's specs are incredible compared to AS5. Is this the stuff you used?
The LM tryout was surely interesting. That stuff looks the same, except I have one with an orange tip cover, probably this is even cooler  In addition to flat surfaces, I assume it should be rubbed carefully to get it evenly distributed. One word of caution, I did this only once, so just learning about its characteristics.
Think I've seen the orange tip cover ones listed too.
If I can't use it on aluminum, it would really limit it's use. On a copper or brass pill, I usually reflow the MCPCB directly to the pill, but sometimes it may not be practical to do.
Yes, the aluminium limitation restricts its use (havent tried though).
I also reflow solder the MCPCBs, probably, the thermal transfer is quite the same on both of these, I wonder what’s the thermal conductivity value for thermal paste? I found a value of 82 for LM. So, maybe LM can be tought as one oppoturtunity in integration, sometimes it increases practicatility or convenience in led centering and led changing for sure . I wonder does multiple times reflow soldering damage the leds, has somebody experience in this? I mean cree specifies thermal ramp times etc. specificly, does it harm to do it multiple times or go too hot for a while?
