Emisar D4V2 turns itself on and switches to turbo instead of stepping down (Video)

Hi guys, my Emisar D4V2 keeps turning itself on. It even switches itself to turbo instead of stepping down, resulting in blisteringly hot body. I’ve caught it on video here https://youtu.be/3IhSXOHPtf0

It turns on to full output, slowly stepping down as it heats up, then suddenly switching to turbo at 00:50. At 1:30 the light starts to smell. If left unattended it would explode/catch on fire as it wasn’t self regulating. Button didn’t work, I had to unscrew the tailcap to turn it off, burnt my fingers doing it.

I ordered the light on September 16th 2019. I’ve been using it with a 18350 battery exclusively without any problems until this weekend. I’ve never put it into muggle mode.

After installing a brand new, fully charged 18650 battery (Sony VTC6) it turned itself on after sitting in a backpack for about 15 minutes. Button didn’t work. The light started to work ok after sitting with the tailcap loosened for about an hour and cooling down. Turned on again on its own after about 15 minutes on low, ramped very fast to high, then down to low, then up again and stayed there. This kept repeating every time I left it sitting with tailcap tightened.

I went back to 18350 battery and it seemed to work ok again for over 2 days.

Today, it turned on in my pocked (with 18350) and managed to burn my leg before getting it out.

Does anybody else have similar experience? Is this something that can be fixed with a firmware update? Is there any other solution? Factory resetting doesn’t seem to help.

So far, I’ve sent 4 emails to Hank, first one couple days ago, with no response yet.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Sounds like the wires to the switch are shorted. As a result, the light thinks you’re holding the button down permanently even when you aren’t touching it.

Solution is probably to open it up and resolder the switch wires, carefully making sure there aren’t any shorts.

If so, why does the light sometimes work ok for periods of time (days even)? It’s ok most of the time with 18350 battery, but will go crazy right after inserting the 18650. 18350 will (not always) malfunction once the light gets warm.

Resoldering the wires isn’t a viable option for me, as I have neither the equipment or skill…
