Emitter / Driver I.D. - P60?

Hope this is the right spot, recently acquired a great condition Solarforce L2N and the seller wasn’t sure what emitter/ driver is in it. Looks like a P60 drop in but there’s no marking on the housing. Taking a guess the emitter is close to a Cree XM-L2 6500k ish. Hoping someone on here may be able to help identify it!

Led is 1st gen xhp 35 hi, the driver is some sort of 3V linear with amc7135 chips. Hard to tell exactly without the other side of the driver.

1 Thank

I was under impression all the 1st gen XHP-35 HI were 12V?

It’s kinda hard to see from the photos, it’s not an XP-L Hi, is it?

1 Thank

Yeah, it’s XP-L! Good catch. Don’t know what I was thinking :person_facepalming::rofl:

2 Thanks

Awesome! Thank you so much! I’ll try and get some time this weekend to pull the reflector off and get some pictures of the driver

1 Thank

Plenty of options to change it if you wanted different modes etc, IIRC these dropin modules use 17mm drivers, personally I’d not try pushing it too hard as the thermals of P60 drop-ins are not as good as “integrated shelf” type designs. Perhaps the convoy 3V 5A buck might fit?

3 Thanks

Not a bad idea! Yeah whatever the current driver is allows for 3 modes that seem like a 10,30,100 for brightness. Not planning on this light to be a show stopper with performance but not a big fan of the 6500k color. Easy route would be a drop in like Malkoff or Lumensfactory but I may do a custom route, the Convoy idea is a good one!

1 Thank

I’ve had good luck with the Sportac/Eagletac p60 dropins

It is an XPL-HI 3V 3A probably 6500K
It’s a good catch and you can add 7135 chip to increase power

1 Thank

I don’t know if these Eagtac dropins are still available, but be aware they came in two versions.
One for P60 lights like Solarforce, the other are specifically aimed at Surefire lights.
The difference lies in the angle of the dropin where it come is contact with the P60 body.
If you have a SF dropin, you need an adapter ring like THIS.

Word of warning: the one-mode Eagtac dropins have no LVP.

2 Thanks

Thanks Henk. I forgot to mention the adapter.

2 Thanks

For an excuse to muck around with a soldering iron, the P60 format is pretty good!

Empty P60 “shells” are available on Kaidomain (and probably AliExpress, possibly on eBay?); I’d get an OP reflector if there’s a choice between smooth and OP. a 519a in a CCT flavour of your choice, plus 17mm driver.

Or, for a kick of nostalgia, Kaidomain still sell the 3.7V Xenon bulbs! A word of caution- The last 2 I ordered have a poor beam pattern though, which is a little disappointing- the wires for the bulb are clearly visible in the beam creating an hourglass shaped hotspot.

1 Thank

I actually still have two of my old xenon bulbs from older surefires that I could use but I gave up on them after LEDs started coming around. I have a soft spot for older P60 setups lol so I like mixing and matching. I’m actually thinking of trying to find an old Solarforce L2-CL1 convex lenses and going with 1800k 519a for an odd floody clean beam and closer to incandescent light

1 Thank

could it be an old nailbender?

1 Thank

Be aware that the 1800K 519A is only 70CRI, so it would be a poor reproduction of incandescent light. I find SFT40 3000K to be much, much more accurate than any 519A; plus, the reduced angular tint shift will work much better for your convex lens setup.

1 Thank

Oh nice! I’ll look into that emitter instead. Any feedback on 219a vs SFT40? Also thank you for the knowledge drop!

If you want 3000K, the SFT40 is a much, much nicer emitter than 519A. In particular, it has

  • Better power handling due to larger footprint, and much better reproduction of colors due to
  • Reduced blue spike and cyan dip
  • More neutral tint
  • Much less angular tint variation, so the beam will be more homogeneous in color.

219A is an antiquated emitter that is no longer available. I would not recommend 219B, 219C, or 219F because they are essentially just lower-power or lower-CRI versions of the 519A.

Always a pleasure to be of help!

1 Thank

Ok I’m sold on the SFT40! Might take some time but I’ll eventually post the build when done. Thank you again @QReciprocity42 !!

1 Thank

I’m excited to see your build and hear your impressions! It’s rare to see the the P60 format nowadays, and a non-focusing convex lens is quite an unusual choice of secondary optic.

1 Thank

Yeah I know! Makes it fun trying something so unusual. I have plenty of other lights that would outperform almost all of my P60 setups so anymore I like trying out unusual combinations and see how they come out. Even convex lenses are very much out of date in the popularity count. Plus there’s a little bit of “why not?” factor lol
