Emitter swap for R5-A3

So I am planning on the strobe delete for the R5-A3, and I also wanted to do the emitter swap as well.

The question is, XP-G2, or XM-L2?

I figure the LED is getting about 1500ma on high, so the XML will be putting out about 50% more light, but I also like the idea of increasing throw….

Thoughts?

My thoughts are XP-G2. I dont know what the reflector is designed for but in a light running at 1.4 amps XP-G2 will have a smaller hot spot but look a lot brighter.

I'd go with an XP-G2 - it's a nice upgrade. I put one in a G10 with a new 1 mode driver, and it's an impressive little light now.

Yeah, I ordered one to swap in. Too bad 14mm sinkpads are not available off the shelf right now…

Anyways, I am out of the country for another month, so I ended up stealing an XML out of a C6 that I don’t use and swapping it into the R5. Not as much throw, but less hot and less blue, with more light. It will work for now until I can get an XP-G2 in there.

I did a quick check of current, and its only pulling 1.7A on high. With the XP-G in there, it was pulling 1.9A

Any idea why? If anything, I thought it would pull more with the XM-L….

Me too. Maybe a bottleneck, like thin wires or under performing battery? Assuming battery level is the same, basically. It can be weird the way the different emitters work with amps being pulled throug the driver.

Same battery, Keeppower protected 14500. None of my others pulled any higher either.

I’ll yank the driver if I have time tomorrow and see if its one of the moddable ones. It’s the first light I have modified so far……, but I didn’t look at the driver yet.
