Sounds like something Rembrandt might have said. I’ll raise a glass to the next one you put on that list.
Nice op, CX. I think I was born a five and just took time off to peek at the other stages. I rarely ever see a stock light I don’t at least wonder about modding. If I can’t open it up it holds little interest.
I think you all should be locked up and the key thrown away. I have no idea what any of this waffle is about. I'm ashamed of the lot of you. Gotta go now. I'm of to work early as there lathe is bigger than mine and I have to make a part for the biggest flashlight I have modded. Gees i'm excited. Now go and get a life, the lot off you.
I no longer buy a light WITHOUT the intention to mod it. As rufusbduck says, a light that wont open up is of no interest what so ever, and I’ve found that for preference a light should arrive in multiple component bags if it is to hold my interest.
what my father never knew, at my age of 14-15… lifted a Marchal 950 100w quartz halogen driving light off his truck (and a Cibie 190 off his little sports car to compare…) grafted it into a homemade wood, angle bracket ‘flashlight’ w a lead acid motorcycle battery, proper cables and a switch and fuse in the handle…wasn’t I the KING OF LUMENS…?!
Excellent job.
I was spoiled for ordinary flashlights when I came across somthing similar that’s sold in the Farmers’ Stores - an SLA in a box driving a 55W halogen bulb in a car headlamp housing on the front of the box. Thousands of them were in use in cattle sheds up and down the country, and I didn’t know about it. I lusted after one of them for years, but couldn’t really justify the cost of it.
Then along came LEDs…
The rest is history.
I think I leapt to stage 5, without meaning to.
The bits were lying there, silently pleading with me to put them together…
A 55W halogen is knocking out between 1000 - 1300lm, as a rough guide.
If I had one of those old ones, I’d stick a cheap and cheerful H4 or H3 LED replacement bulb in it - nothing like the output, but it could then run on harvested laptop cells.
I do not fit without a sub-class; Stage 5 modder.
Of the 40 or so lights I’ve acquired in the last three months, four have remained unmodified.
Edit: and only one of those has not been at least partially disassembled. J)
It’s probably using a standard base it shares with a 12V automotive bulb, like H3 or whatever is equivalent where you are.
Certainly, the ones I’ve seen do that. The makers just take off-the-shelf sub-units and stick then together and things like bulbs are too costly to get made as custom units (unless you’re selling millions, of course), especially for makers of farm/construction handlamps, where the sales won’t be huge.
I just ordered my 19th, a host for a P-60 I have that’s lonely. And the custom that’s still with the machinist will be 20. And that is going to have to be an end to it for a while. (because I’ll have to get emitters for Nitro’s stars so I can start modifying some of the one’s I’ve got! Just ordered a soldering station. )
