Feedback requested - driving a single 219b on possible direct drive and maybe qlite

This is my first time micro-managing power for a single 219b build.

I’m all outta qlite drivers. My original thought was I can power a single 219b with a 3.08A QLITE and not have to worry about what type of high discharge battery a user put in there (this is true right?, if I’m limiting draw to 3.08, a user can safely throw in a 30Q or vtc5a for that matter and a QLite would prevent damage to the emitter?)

Since I have no more left, I’m left with some direct drive rated for 10A+ drivers from Vinh and from Matt and a couple of DrJones H17Fx Driver w/ lucidrv2. So if I go with these, I run the risk of allowing the 219b to draw way too much current than it can handle right? If so, I was thinking of throwing one of these in and using an NCR18650B battery and maybe run some longer leads to bring down amperage close to 3A. But if I do this, the user runs the risk of damaging a 219b if he accidentally adds an 30Q or something high correct?

Which path is best to power a single 219b? How should I approach a single 219b build?

Thanks in advance for helping me out

I wouldn’t put a single 219b on a FET/DD driver of any sort. The risk of overdriving that emitter is quite great, even if you attempt to add extra resistance. Too risky and unpredictable. For me, at least.

I see two options:

1. Mod one of those drivers. If they’re 3-channel drivers, the type with a single 7135 channel, a multi-7135 channel, then the FET, you can just flick the FET off the board so it’ll never engage. This will limit your total power output to the 7135 banks, which is probably 7 or 8 chips (2.7-3 amps, assuming the firmware fully engages all channels on turbo). It’ll also make your firmware feel funky because the mode spacing will be all wrong, but it’ll work.

2. Buy a new driver. This is what I would do. Qlites are fine and 3 amps is good, assuming your build has a good thermal path to cool that emitter. Personally, my single 219b setups (which is something I use very often, there’s one in my pocket today) currently have LD-4 drivers from Neven, led4power.com. Constant current FTW

Thanks for the feedback! What if I go with a direct drive and a NCR18650B battery? Will I leverage the internal resistence of the battery and additionally, be capped at its max current?

I still wouldn’t recommend it.

The VF of the 219B is extremely low, as low as the 219C, but without the durability.

That means even with a high resistance cell, it may still push it a lot, and even push the cell higher than you’d like to.

H17Fx will never use the FET unless you program the highest modes.
