Finally I'm doing a build for me. Really? Finished Now with Beam Shots.

Mar,18,2012

I would really like keep one of these lights just one time, but I always end up selling them off. This time I'm keeping it.Foot in Mouth

Well, ok, that's my intention........ Ummm either that or send it to Anthony Maglica and see maybe I can get a real job, making custom Maglites.Tongue Out Not.......

Enough,

I really love Red. It's my favorite color. I have this 2D Red Maglite and I'm going to make it into another 1D, with some new ideas for some filework.

I just haven't decided yet to do it with the stock side switch or go with the tail switch. If I do the tail switch, then I am going to make two cuts (see photo), because that will better balance the knurled section left, between the front and back.

If I keep the side switch, I remove 55mm from the OAL. If I use the tail switch, I remove 90mm from the OAL.

Decisions, decisions.......

I will be building the whole light, since it's for me and I will give you the usual (too much detail), as I normally do.

More Later.................................................................................................

Well, I have done a little to the head. It's not polished good yet, but here's a couple shots of it.

There's a lot more file work to be done, this is just the begining and polishing is last.

Enjoy!

Finally got to do a little more work on my Red 1D Mag.

The cosmetics are done and now I have to start on the guts. LOL, I don't even have an emitter, since I sold them all, but I'm not going with a T6 anyhow.

Off to order parts..........

Later!

Finished the light tonight.

I put in an XM-L T4 LED from DigiKey. It's a 4,500K and I like it because it looks a little more like an incan.

I used one of the CNQG reflectors I had. I ended up making it a LOP, due to the inevitable rings that I hate so much. Now it has a good center spot and a lot of flood, but the flood isn't super bright, most is centered in the spot. Here's a shot of the reflector and some beam shots.

The indoors shot against the yucky yellow wall.

b2

The Garage door shot.

b3

Along side the house.

b4

Up in the trees ahead, about 40 yards.

b5

In the trees across the pond, about 80+ yards. There looks to be a lot of foreground light, well that's the streetlight right in front and to the right of me. They get real upset if I shoot out the streetlight just to get a dark area for beamshots.

I feel that this would be considered a shallow reflector and doing the LOP coating should have given a larger spot, but it didn't. This thing has a respectable spot that reaches out there and I'm surprised and pleased with it. I also feel that there's not enough difference between a T4 and a T6 to worry about. Direct drive with 3AA Eneloops helps, but I am using one of the budget chinese battery holders and the stock tailcap spring, so there's lots of resistance and this thing is still nice and bright. I even tried it with Alkalines too, and it's even brighter, although they sag quickly.

Ok, I'm done now.

How to make a Crenulated Bezel/Tailcap with hand tools.

Modifying a Maglite "D" Switch to negative circuit instead of positive circuit.

Keep the side switch  Every light in the budget world now has a tail switch
I can’t wait to see how this one turns out. I viewing your build pictures.

Tail switch. Smaller the better!

The builds you do for yourself are always the best, no pressure, take your time and build anything you want plus if you loose interest at any time you can always sell it.

Keep the side switch-much more convenient and easier on the hands and wrists.

Updated with a video on how to make Crenulated parts.

Make it as short as possible with a tailswitch. I think you should keep it but I suspect you won't.

Can you please do your next one on patience?

My wife would attest to the fact that since patience is not a FOUR letter word, I don’t have any.Laughing

I have no patience for most things, driving, gardening, computing, etc. For some reason, this relaxes me. I don't know why.

Great!!!!!

Updated more photos in the top post.

I like that fluting on the back of the head. Very nice!

Its almost unbelievable how much better that light looks with such small changes. Plus, the red really rocks. :D

Subscribing to this thread :) That fluting looks pretty cool. Another one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments.

That’s how I felt, up untill I did it the first time. Why didn’t I think of that? I have been wanting to do something to the heads for a long time. I can’t do rings (I have tried Yell trash can), but what got me to thinking was filework, like I’ve done on knives. Once I did the bezel, it seemed right to try something that would be along those same lines.

That looks awesome so far. I love what you've done with it. I'd vote side switch. Mainly because I wish everyone of my lights had a side switch. so much more convenient to me. Plus if you decide to sell this one, i'll be all over it ;) hehe.

You know what's worse than being able to do all this stuff, is not even knowing what it's called.Tongue Out Fluting - Heck I thought that was when a bunch of people with flutes got together and had a jam session. LOL

Crenulated - the first time I saw that in a post, I had to go google it.Embarassed I guess I should brush up on what I'm doing, so I know what it's called. Maybe I'm a master of disaster- that reminds me of a joke, but I can't tell it here.Sealed

That look lovely. Great idea about the fluting (and nice joke too LOL)

I vote for a side switch. I figure this size light is hardly EDC even when cut down by 90 mm. And the side location is just better for that size of light IMHO. Besides that side switches on torches will be the new black!

Ya, once all these "fire" light makers figure out how to drill a hole in the side of the light, they will all have side switches. I'm favoring side switch myself, just because it's traditional. Something old, something new...
