First report that Wurkkos has started shipping USB 14500

this post shows a recent TS10SG:

Stay tuned for reports of protection tripping on Turbo… this issue will go away as more TS10 begin to ship w the 50% FET firmware (that I prefer).

Also be aware that on lights w firmware 0713-2023-07-29, Advanced Smooth Ramping ceiling is set to Turbo by mistake.

The issue of Turbo tripping protection on USB 14500, will go away as more TS10 begin shipping w the newer 50% FET firmware. (version 0000-2024-04-20)

This is disappointing. I was about to order a couple ts10s, I may hold off for a second before I do.

Any idea what the capacity is going to be? is this a regular 14500 with the usb added, or a shorter, lower capacity battery so it stays the same size?

Sofirn’s 14500 usb and regular cells are both rated 900 mAh (so are the Wurkkos’ regular 14500s, I don’t have a usb one). I prefered ordering SP10v3 with the regular version because I had exactly the same capacity concerns. Once the seller messed up and shipped usb version. I’ve tested its capacity and it turned out to be larger than 900 mAh (something like 912 mAh, discharge current was like 400 or 500 mA).
OTOH, they could’ve upgraded to a modern model with a much larger capacity if they gave up the usb port.

All the 14500 w USB that I know of (Lumintop, Acebeam, Skilhunt, and now Wurkkos) are rated 920mAh (or slightly higher), essentially the same as the non USB Unprotected Button Top 900mAh that TS10 have been shipping with in the past.

If you want a battery with more capacity, you can buy a Vapcel F12 1250mAh Flat Top. The TS10 works with all those choices.

The great thing about USB-C Protected Button Top 14500 is they are Not longer than 50mm, which is the same as the Unprotected Button top that Wurkkos has been using.

The Only downside to using a Protected LiIon in a TS10, is the potential to trip protection when using Turbo. I disable Turbo anyway…

The Big Advantage of a USB-C 14500 is that it opens up the TS10 to be used without needing a separate charger. This is a Big Advantage for new people. It allows me to gift a TS10 to someone that does not own a charger. Plus there is the advantage for me, that I could travel with a TS10 and would not need to bring a charger.

In every way except Turbo, the USB battery is a Big Upgrade. And for people that still want to use Turbo, they can choose to buy the Vapcel H10 Flat Top. But I strongly discourage using Turbo in a TS10, due to risk of damaging the CSP LEDs.

Plus, many new TS10 are shipping with firmware that limits Turbo to 50%, which I think is a Very Good idea.

My only disappointment with some TS10, is that until recently, they have been shipping with 2023 firmware that uses 100% FET. I reflash my lights to 2024 firmware with 50% FET.

The TS10V2 Copper, TiCu, and MAO, all ship with 50% FET firmware already, and I expect the other colors will begin to do so also as old stock is replaced.

As long as they don’t start designing lights longer than they need to be to accommodate the protected cells, making it annoying to use normal cells, like Acebeam does.

fwiw, although it is common for Protected 16340, 18350 and 18650 to be longer than unprotected Flat Tops, by about 3-4mm, that is not the case with USB-C Protected Button Top 14500, which are Not longer than AA Eneloop and Not longer than the Unprotected Button top 14500 that Wurkkos has been using.

So there is No Reason to make a 14500 light Longer when using Protected USB-C batteries. This is a Big Advantage for the USB batteries.

Although Vapcel F12 and H10 Unprotected Button Tops Are Longer than 50mm, and can cause problems in a TS10, the Flat Top versions are actually shorter and work well in a TS10.

This is why I do not recommend Unprotected Button Tops but Do Recommend Protected Button Tops w USB-C charging.

Yeah you are right, the only extra long 14500s I’ve seen are the discontinued Olight ones. I guess it’s mainly a problem with 18650s and 21700s.

Noticed this while browsing over the weekend.

Here is my Lumintop 14500 w USB-C, that I can use in my TS10 and Emisar D3AA: (both with Turbo disabled)

I dont see any mention yet, on the Wurkkos site, of their new USB-C battery. But they are probably all coming from the same factory as the Lumintop, Manker, Acebeam and Skilhunt USB-C 14500.

the skilhunt branded ones are actually rated for 1050mAh… (only sold With a light, not available separately)

The acebeam version are rated for 1000mAh.

None of these USB batteries are cheap. When bought alone they run about $8, plus shipping… imo its going to be a very good deal if Wurkkos starts shipping w USB 14500. I would even pay extra for them…

Although capacity ratings are beginning to vary from 920mAh to 1050mAh, imo they are all good. Im not too concerned about runtime these days…

Since I started using rechargeable batteries, runtime has become a non issue for me.

It was different when I was using disposable batteries, that I had to keep repurchasing. Now, runtime is essentially unlimited… when a battery gets about half empty, I just swap in a spare, and charge the partly depleted one back up.

I almost never actually drain a rechargeable battery all the way down to the LVP trigger… although I did recently.

This is what a TS10 does, to warn a user when a battery gets down to 3.12V… it flashes the Aux like this:
