Forgetful scientists accidentally quadruple lithium-ion battery lifespan

EXCERPT: “Rather than discarding this forgotten batch, they decided to test it by building batteries using these particles. It turns out they have potentially solved the problem of using aluminum for the anodes in the battery. The extra long soak meant the anodes did not expand and contract, in fact they created a battery that over 500 charge/discharge cycles retained up to four-times the capacity of the equivalent graphite anode batteries. These batteries last considerably longer in terms of usable lifespan and, according to MIT, can hold up to three-times the energy.”

There we go again, it is a three months cycle. For the last 6 years every announced breakthrough of more than 10% at a time was soon never heard of again.

Probably.

If this works out though it wouldn’t be the first time an “accident” led to an important discovery.

Being from Connecticut, the first thing that comes to mind is Charles Goodyear and Vulcanized Rubber.

Here are 10 others. 15 Life-Changing Inventions That Were Created by Mistake

But, THE MOST important accidental invention, BY FAR, was the invention of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

And yet another awesome breakthrough…I will immediately recycle my batteries because I am sure this will reach market never next week

Nuts, what model Opus will charge these??? Never mind, my Nitecore D4 has a switch for that, only 150ma, but it will do it!!! LOL

I had high hopes for lithium-titanate from AltairNano back in 2007… they tanked and the batteries are not being developed for small scale applications…

Ha! The chinese can quadrouple the battery life by changing the label + magic

If i had a nickel for every breakthrough that disappeared i’d be quite wealthy and awash in flashlights

MIT’s PR office has announced 683 of the 17 most important breakthrough discoveries of the last decade.

I’m making those numbers up.

Think about it, where would technology be today without peanut butter cups?

no man on the moon, no internet, no tablets or cell phones, and worst of all, no tickle me elmo

Great.
A lifetime lithium battery

Actually, if ANY new magic-battery-foo comes to fruition, I would bet Bort’s left nut that it is this one. The processes for making it is simple, well defined, scalable, and practical. That said, I’ll hang onto Bort’s right nut for a while…

hopefully not quadruple the price when they are available. Was a good and quick read.

Not too tightly, he’ll start sounding more high pitched in his posts…

Did you guys catch this part? I clicked through from the article brad linked, back to the larger article, where they claim that the aluminum is able to hold a higher energy density than the graphite they’ve been using. So, it sounds legit. Imagine a 18650 cell with 10Ah capacity as well as a lifetime of re-charge cycles! Electric vehicles are sure to see the biggest benefit from this, followed closely by laptops and cell phones. In cars, I’d expect to see the same size or not-too-much-smaller batteries with much improved run time. In laptops and cell phones, I’d expect something in the middle - somewhat smaller package and somewhat longer run-time.

I would hope that with the greater capacity comes greater output current, but they didn’t mention that in the article, or at least I missed it if they did. It would be cool to have a 4Ah 14500 with 15A continuous current rating, or something like that. :open_mouth: You guys will be glad you bought a 100% copper K6 from Krono’s group buy.

Soon, we’ll be able to fully power up the T-800, but remember what happens when the cell gets damaged?

KuoH

you are usually the most skeptical one, however the vast fortune i have attained from all the bets on the failed breakthroughs is more then adequate to fill an envelope full of cash for your personal enjoyment (or to return the favour)

Anyone interested in a bridge I have for sale in Brooklyn, New York??

Mr pyros savings on his LED house conversion should pay for the bridge

Yep, I’m past the payback period and rollin’ in the savings dough. In a couple of months I’ll be able to afford a trip to Starbucks.
