I was browsing the camping section at Academy and came across this Magellan flashlight…
I was glad to see more flashlight brands getting into the 1000+ lumens category. Of course there was no indication on the package as to what type of LED was in there, so I decided to look…
Sorry for the blurry image, but it was tough to get a good pic through the plastic. It looks like an XHP50 or XHP70 led in there. I could be (and probably am) wrong about the led type, but I was surprised to find a four die led sitting at the bottom of that reflector. If it truly is a XHP50/70, would it be worth the $50 price tag for future modding.
Ofc, that aerospace grade aluminum is definitely an excellent start!!
hmm… it certainly looks like an XHP-50 to me, but I’m still skeptical. This light uses 3 alkalines, so it would take some voltage boosting to operate an XHP, and usually that’s just to complicated for these cheaper lights. It’s possible though.
A little difficult to tell but I think telltale sign that it's MK-R is the more distinct "lines" between the dies as well the marker holes on the corners of the emitter.
