Not to TC on your sale, but the internet is littered with dozens of reports of the Lacrosse BC900 chargers suffering melt downs and overheating. This is probably the most dangerous mass produced internationally sold name brand charger available. In spite of dozens of reports from angry customers, Lacrosse Technology flatly refused to acknowledge the dangers of the charger they were manufacturing until they finally decided to send a new power supply to its customers and claimed that it resolved the problems. I acquired 4 of the replacements PSU’s, and they each tested at vastly different voltages while under load. Some were higher than the original, some lower! Pure garbage! I continued to test and use my BC900’s and BC9009’s with the replacement PSU’s and found that the chargers would all still periodically miss a charge termination and then proceed to cook the cell until it overheated. Each time I removed the cell before it had a chance to melt plastic and burn my house down.
I hope you’ll call Lacross and demand some compensation for your charger. They probably still remember me quite well, because I never back down when a company tries to shirk its responsibilities to a consumer.
Whatever you do, please dont try to sell this charger to someone else. Run it over with your car or smash it with a large hammer, then pack it up in a box and mail it back to the manufacturer with a nasty note enclosed.
I will contact Lacrosse tomorrow
however my research indicates that not all are affected units and I have had ZERO issues in 5 or whatever number of years so I think I have a good one. my opinion is a few batches were screwed up and they gave all units a bad name. I have complete confidence in my unit have owned it for so long without issue.
I will investigate further though to learn more.
I have just measured the AC adapter voltage without a load and voltage was 3.04
this is similar to the airbag situation,
should we all stop driving cause our airbag can kill us due to the now well known manufacturing incident ?
FlashPilot ; By some chance , are you alluding to the
possibility that the LaCrosse BC900 is a total P.O.S !
Attn: For those of you who are mystified by the
acronym—“POS”. Here is a partial revelation of
its’ meaning.—P stands for Piece , O stands for Of
and S stands for SxxT ! You figure it out
Im glad that you havent suffered, but with so many excellent name brand AA/AAA smart chargers available that have little to no reports of repetitive meltdowns, I think anyone reading this will hopefully avoid buying one that is world famous for it. Even worse is the manufacturer’s initial complete denial of the problems experienced by dozens of others, and then their subsequent ultimate refusal to recall a dangerous product after sending replacement PSU’s that did not remedy the situation.
When you call Lacross, they will probably play dumb (which they are reported as being notorious for doing), so dont be afraid to escalate through their chain of command until you find satisfaction.
Fact: regardless of some well publicized recalls, airbags continue to save FAR more lives every single day than they take in an entire year. So in answer to your question, I would say “NO”.
Please let us know what happens.
Good luck.
From the reviews, many would probably assign it a far worse acronym than that! Its sad that the company didnt stand behind its products. Lets hope mmaghakian finds some satisfaction through the manufacturer. Maybe a free weather station or a coupon.
it won’t be easy dealing with Lacrosse
all they have to do is point out that the charger has a 4.2 out of 5 rating from over 1000 reviewers
less than 1 out of 10 gave it a 1 star rating
There are dozens of reported overheating problems. Here’s a few links that might help you from back when this charger was still in production. I had 4 different versions of this same charger and they were all dangerous garbage.
Sorry for all the reading that might lay ahead of you. There’s still a lot more available than what I just listed. Id probably call first and see what they might offer before investing your time.
here is what Mr Happy said in one post in one of the threads you linked to:
_How can I explain this to you? It is not normal behavior, it is a fault. It does not happen to every charger all the time, it happens to perhaps one charger in a hundred, or 1 in 1000. Your chargers may never develop the fault and may never do anything bad. If one person has a car that breaks down, does it mean that every car of that kind is going to break down?
_
I agree with him, I have seen lots of products with all possible faults, sounds like a few bad batches are making people think every single one of these is bad
if this was a car you would have a lot of people complaining but a lot of people not worried, like with many GM vehicles that KILL people.
no different than the air bag situation, a known major MESS
far worse than a few very loud people saying all BC-900’s are bad
I guess I should consider myself lucky to be alive after using it for 5 or whatever years.
selling it cause I got way too many chargers.
As I mentioned, I had 4 of these POS chargers, each of a different version number, and they would all periodically miss a charge termination and overheat a cell. This is why I did my homework, invested the time in testing and read the entire threads and many others.
In your example, you would have done well to read the entire thread I linked to help you, rather than only through post #4 in which you quoted.
Later in the same thread after the facts were presented,
Mr Happy later concluded:
“Warranties usually are designed to cover defects in manufacture. But it would appear from detailed analysis by knowledgeable people that the BC-900 is defective in design. Since LaCrosse is evidently unwilling to admit this in public, you are left with two options: buy it and take the risk of a meltdown, or decline to accept the risk and don’t buy it.
Quite frankly, I don’t understand why LaCrosse has not done the obvious and had the design defects corrected (or at least improved). It seems they would rather do nothing while continuing to deny there is a problem.
While the BC-900 is a charger I found rather interesting and almost bought before I learned more about the subject, I am now very firmly in the don’t risk it camp.“
Also, it doesnt matter if the charger is 5 minutes old or 500 years. Its still a BC900, which is a potential meltdown waiting to occur.
You might have accidentally skipped over all of these amazon complaint links in post #1 as well (these are only amazon customers! there are hundreds of others complaints floating around online.):

Im not picking on you, but your insinuation that this charger could be considered even remotely safe couldn’t be any farther from the truth. There are enough of these defunct crappy chargers floating around that others who dont know better might consider buying a used one. Those thinking about one will hopefully find this thread through Google search so that they may learn of the risks.
thank you for the update
I am selling it cause I have 4 chargers including the 3100 I just got
no need for it as I can use two other chargers that I own that do more than the 900 does.
if no one buys it so be it
but I am including 12 Eneloops and other items
