GCOOL 3*7135 1.05A circuit board, Ramping Mode

Hi I recently bought a this driver and I had a couple of questions about it.

I received the driver today and I just wanted to know how to wire everything together.

This driver will be parted up with a Cree XM-L t6.

My question is, where do I solder the GND wire?

I have the positive from the driver connected to the positive on the LED and the negative from the driver connected to the negative on the LED.

Also, I have 4 extra AMC 7135 soldered to the driver. Making it 2.4 amps.

I’m pretty sure this is the same driver.

GND (Ground) goes to Battery Negative (Flashlight Body in most hosts)

I tried GND to battery negative and the ramping modes doesn’t work but strobe works.

When I turn the flashlight on.

It will go into a random brightness or it will flash on then off and stay off.

I also tried the method on the website on how to get into ramping mode.

That doesn’t work.

Could it be that it needs two switches, one for on-off the other for ramping?

Or could it be that one of the negatives needs always battery ground, and the other a momentary switch to ground, like flashlights with electronic switches do?

Just random thinking, never seen that before, but curious. Maybe could be a nice driver for side switch torches...

2,4A... are you using it with XP-G2?

Doesn’t look like it to me. Looks like “GND” wire is connected directly to the ground plane - not to a microcontroller pin. It’s always possible, as the pictures aren’t perfect, but if I had to guess - I’d guess against that possibility.

I’d be more likely to guess that it’s a crappy driver, to be honest…

But at 2.4A I'd choose a XP-G2 over an XM-L...

Depends what you’re looking for… A XP-G2 will throw further, but an XM-L will run cooler and give off more total lumens at that current… Plus, an XM-L will last forever at that current since it’s well within specification. How long will an XP-G2 last? No one knows….

I’m using it with a XM-L t6 in a shadow vg-10 host with a forward switch (momentary).

I really hope it isn’t a crappy driver.

As of right now I just have the GND to LED negative and Driver positive to LED positive.

I measured it at the tail cap and I get 2.36 amps using a Panasonic NCR18650A 3100mAH

- to the LED negative, + to the LED positive, GND to the battery negative (flashlight host).

Have you tried the driver before adding the extra chips?

Yeah I know GND doesn’t go to LED negative.

I was just trying different methods.

But you are right I should of tested the driver before adding those 7135 chips.

I guess I’ll have to desolder them tomorrow.

Have you got a reverse clicky you could try? Could be your struggling to get the timing right with the forward clicky?

Kinda old thread, but now that i’m interested in this driver I found that CNquality has this driver and sort of an explanation on how to get into the ramping mode.

What they need ate wiring instructions. My first thought a while back when I first saw this driver was it was meant for use with an electronic switch. I still do.

Just bringing this thread back to life. I’ve been looking at this driver and also want to know the propper way to wire it up. I too thought that maybe it is meant for an electronic side switch, but on IOS it states “*Recommended to be used with a forward clicky/tactical switch”.
Is there anyone that has successfully installed one of these? Please tell.

If I remember correctly, the riddle of the 3rd wire was solved somewhere … It’s an additional contact to Ground/batt-, it’s not for an electronic switch.

…so, it would just have to be grounded to the pill?

Looking at the picture, there does not appear to be a grounding ring on the pill side of the circuit board. If that is so, you would have to hard wire to the pill/flashlight body to get a complete circuit with the battery.

I installed one, I removed the third wire and just installed it like any other driver would. Worked as normal. I have it in an EDC 18650(Convoy S3) so the pill has a grounding ring that screws in to hold the driver in place.

In theory, since it’s DC, you could have a battery of hundreds of volts but there would be no safety problem.

And with PWM and therefore capacitive coupling to the flashlight shell, there’d still be no shock hazard, in principle. The flashlight shell voltage with respect to earth ground would go to zero volts and so no current would flow through you.

I will say that the ‘ground’ or ‘circuit common’ PC trace should have a low impedance per inch, otherwise you may get oscillations.
