Geothermal HVAC

Anybody running GSHP’s? What do you think about it?

Not running one myself, but I would upgrade to one in a heartbeat if I could afford it. My cubicle neighbor has had one installed for 19 years now and had his first repair last year - circulation motor. They are "all the rage" around these parts.

We have one for heating purposes only. It rocks. Saves us about 2/3 of the heating bill. Compared to oil. Compared to natural gas it is more like half.

Don’t have one myself but have only heard good things as they are getting quite popular around here, except maybe not to have the source pipe work in one spot as the lawn doesn’t like the cold!

About a month ago while on holiday we had a tour of this 300kw marine source heat pump. Think they said they where using about 140000litres of oil per year before installing. Insane.

Big old house

How common are they in your area?

Not too common around here so not many people want to work on them (repair). The company that's been installing them lately doesn't do any service.

Does your system have vertical or horizontal loops? How many tons? How long have you had it?

I have had mine for about a year now, both heating and cooling, and like you I am enjoying the low electricity bills! 2 vertical loops, 300ft wells and 4 tons.

WOW, 19 years and just now on his first repair. I hope mine works that well.

Yeah, the sticker price can be a shocker. The 30% tax credit is what makes these things a little better on the pocket! They will expire 12/31/2016.
