Get a Xenon light + P60 host to boot

Hi,

I just got this light in from Tmart U.S. today:

http://www.tmart.com/UltraFire-WF-502B-3W-170-Lumens-3.7V-Xenon-LED-Flashlight_p100889.html

I just posted a review of it, but it probably hasn’t shown up yet.

As I mentioned in my review, I got this for 2 reasons (actually 3):

- I was curious about comparing a Xenon light to LED lights since I’ve only had LED ones

- I was also curious if the 502B would be compatible with P60 drop-ins

  • It was fairly inexpensive to find out

I tried it out tonight, and the beam is pretty bright, more throw than flood, and it’s a very warm yellow (I’m not into tints, so is that good, or is it bad?).

And, I tested P60 compatibility both ways, putting a SolarForce P60 drop-in in this 502B, and taking the Xenon drop-in and putting it into an SF L2P.

Both ways worked fine.

I was also curious if I could swap reflectors, since all of my P60 drop-ins are smooth, and this 502B has a very light OP reflector. Unfortunately, the reflectors are not compatible… the threaded part on the head from the 502B is much smaller that the P60 drop-ins I have.

I actually tried the smooth P60 reflector in the 502B, by just putting it on top of the Xenon head, and then screwing the bezel in. That fit, but I think that either the hole in the P60 reflector was too large, or maybe the position of the Xenon lamp was off, and I got a really ugly output.

Anyway, I guess that for $8.80, it was a fairly cheap experiment, and I also now have a Xenon flashlight :)!

Luddite light!

Had to look that up, in the context of this thread :):

I’m not at all opposed to technological change… just the opposite, but I’m also curious about stuff sometimes, and had read that some of the HID lights used Xenon, or maybe use to use Xenon. Also, don’t some of the Surefires still use Xenon?

Anyway, it was interesting comparing the beam tint to my LED lights, for me, at least.

Also, I’m not intending to go looking for more Xenon flashlights :)!!

Later,
Jim

Edit: Picture comparing LED vs. the Xenon 502B:

L2P with SF drop-in on left, 502B with Xenon lamp on right.

I have both lights, and tried a 9V xenon bulb with 2xRCR123 batteries, and a convex lens.
That xenon flashlight can burn paper, if the light focused on the paper
Xenon bulbs are more powerful if the voltage is high, and produce too much heat on front.
