After what seems like an age trying to get some time free to get to my garage I’ve finally managed to get my next 3AA holder completed. I bought a Forstner Bit for my drill press and got going, design was updated as per Old Lumens suggestion, i.e. +ve fixed and used the -ve end for the loading of the cells.
I spent a bot more time on cutting the copper contacts, so they look a bit neater, did a bit of polishing, could be better as I didn’t have the correct grade glass paper. The wood had been fine sanded and coated in boiled linseed oil for protection.
The dome nut is brass, just for aesthetics, it’s not used for electrical contact, I originally had an aluminium disk with a tapped hole for this which worked, but made the holder just that bit too long.
One thing which I did discover was my Chinese Drill Press from Aldi (for our non european friends Aldi is a discount shop) has a huge amount of run out, it took me probably 8 goes before I had 2 parts I could use, which was very frustrating.
Any, pics:
I like it. Thanks for the pics.
Do we have an Old Lumens in the making especially with your persistance. A rare quality. a very nice job. In Australia we have had Aldi for a few years now.
I’ll tell you, I like the wood look!
I have always liked something made with wood in it. I think you ought to try a wooden flashlight next. If the battery/driver/led circuit is complete on it’s own, the body/head does not have to be metal. A wooden flashlight would be totally unique!
that’s a beautiful piece of work, well done! I love working with wood, it’s satisfying in a completely different way to working with metal.
Wood - the original composite !
Very nicely done.
Wonderful! That is just the style I was thinking about when I saw your ver. 1.0.
So good of you to take the time to show us this and I love the way your've hammered the +/- symbols into the copper plates.
Thank you for showing and sharing this.
BTW: Aldi's tools generally suck :-( I wish they didn't but I've sampled some of their stuff over the years and it sucks. You might be lucky on one or two items but thats just it, luck!
