goofing off with a cheap rayovac lantern

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rayovac-4-x-AA-LED-Lantern/21106270

I had picked one of these up black friday at walmart. it was sitting at the checkout counter for something like $1.50, and it intrigued me. i could not resist it for so cheap. saw it and though "that could make a decent cheap thrower".

well turns out its a plastic reflector. should not have expected anything more for that price. so hotwire is out of the question. stashed the light away and forgot about it. i had recently found a two pack or rayovac krypton bulbs for 3 cell lights. thought "hmmm"

before the bulb swap i got 3920 lux at 1 meter, after the swap i got 11080 lux at 1 meter. thats on some cheap carbon zinc panasonic AAs

well there it is. in the mood to mess around with lights, and need some sinkpads and a qlite driver before i can do anything worth while... i ended up swapping the star and driver from my c108 to my copper c8 pill, but not a permanent swap. need a 20mm sinkpad and a qlite driver for it.

also have a c mag heat sink i need to tinker with, but need an emitter and not exactly sure what driver i want to do in it.

also have the small sun zy-t13 mod i killed the xre in i need to do something with, but still not exactly sure what i want to do for an emitter

well bored on a saturday night, thats what i got for now.

maybe a ROP in the little all plastic rayo?

well tinker mode engaged… swapped the three bad caps in the 37” lcd my fiances mom gave me to try and fix. something like $15 and 45 min later, we got a 37” lcd for the bedroom

RayoROP…has the power to melt itself.

So that worked? I remember reading your thread about capacitors and all that a while back. Cool, ’grats 8)

yeah, one of the traces on the back side of the board looked damaged before the repair, but i was as careful as i could not to cause any more damage to it. two of the three caps had the tops leaking and the bottoms blown out, the third just had the top leaking. i should have taken pics of them to post…

edit: i bought the rayo pretty much in hopes it had a metal reflector, and the cells were in series. well the cells are in series, but no go on metal reflector.

That's the same lantern I bought for my thread about using those stars with the 7135's mounted on them and an XM-L emitter. I'll run at either 700mA or maybe 350mA for more runtime. I just ordered the parts. Stock the output of this lantern sucks! Worst beam pattern ever!

I wonder how would it do with a SST90 swap and driven hard, with a 26650 mod. ?

i think if youd spend the money for an sst90, youd want to spend more for a host thats not 95% plastic

I was more kidding than serious. I do have a SST90 chip kicking around, not sure yet what im going to transplant it in.

send it this way and ill see how it does in this quality host
