I bought a Small Sun ZY-T619 light about 4 years ago. It looked like it had a deep reflector and would throw well, plus I think I paid $8 for it. When I got into it, I was disappointed. It had a big hollow pill, so I just shoved it aside. Fast forward to today, and I found the light again. I had actually forgotten why I never did anything with it until I opened it up again.
Big hollow pill

Hmmmm, I may have a solution.

I cut the top part off and filed a little and it fits perfect now. Installed an old XML2 U3 1A LED I had. It was on a Sinkpad, so I just soldered it to the new pill. I had an old single mode FET driver laying in the parts bin. I installed it I to the pill, took the spring off, and ran wires to the slave board.

Now it should be a decent light. Beam pattern looked good on the wall. Pics of the light and reflector. New life into a POS light.

Nice mod n10. That was one odd looking pill.

It just had a big PCB for the LED over the hollow area. On the other side was a slave board with spring wired to a floating driver the to the LED PCB. Lots of air and hollowness.

Out of boredom came huge pics a nice mod

Nice job n10sivern. Way to improvise to end up with a useful light.

Beamshots posted and pictures resized. I’m happy with it. Should be a decent thrower.

Ahh… the SmallSun modding posts!
I miss these types of posts. These were some of the things I really liked about this forum years ago. Taking a light that missed its mark and turning it to gold!
Thanks

I miss all of the turning cheap lights into powerful lights too. HD2010, ZY-T08, X9, etc.

I have two Tangs Fire HD 2010s that I pulled out of storage this weekend. I have an XML U2 with and East 92 driver in them now. I was wondering what new emitter I could replace the the XML with without changing the driver.

I have direct drive MTG2’s in mine with an extension for 2 batteries.

What about HXP 35s? can they be run by the current driver?

That I don’t know. I don’t remember the specs on that driver.

I’ll have to look in to it. That would be sweet!

Nice mod with an impressive result!
Look around for new types of hosts, they tend to be less crappy thna 4 years ago: less work and nicer result. Perhaps also less of a challenge but then, you can spend the time making it even better.
Ya all remember adding a ‘permanent’ aspheric lens to those HD2010’s and running a dedomed XPG2 pushed with a 26650?
Man, to this day that is one of my best throwers. I just went direct drive with it. Could’ve gone with an Eastman 92 but heck it went DD anyway so why bother.

I am thinking about putting a NW XPL HI in one of mine. Keeping the driver . I might have to adjust the reflector spacer a little due to the smaller emitter .

True but it seems all the lights that could be good throwers are $50-60 plus, with most being even more expensive.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I really like the fact that some of the old school flashlights had the adjustable screw in pill, no having to play “Shim City” with different size emitter boards.
That is one reason I like the OLD Convoy L2. Have 2 of the Lustfire K08 (now there’s a Name!!) version of the L2 and you can just do a quick resistor stack on it and hit 5 amps and it can run 1 or 2 cells, looks great in shorty mode.

The Lustfire D01 is/was cool too, like a heavy C8 with split 26650 tubes, ahead of it’s time.

Have one of these Small Sun ZY-T619 , never opened it up but always liked the beam it has.
Now you have me curious, will try this weekend.
Was that brass pill from one of the Odepro’s?
Thanks
