The copper star is marked “Thorfire” and is indeed Direct Thermal Path.

Dale do the final sample light and production light share the same driver?

A high current driver with a very good low, as I understand, is quite a task to design and the components are not the cheapest around. Not something expected in a 20 dollar light, even not in a great designed light like this. We were hoping for it, but at EE they just did not manage to make it. Led4power made a great driver, he will know about the feasability. I think it is no coindidence that you rarely find one, even in high end lights.

When I came across this deal I knew that there was a risk the supplier would alter the final product to save cost which has happened. The end result is still a great outcome and no criticism should be directed to Krono as he went to great efforts to organise it all. My torch hasn’t yet arrived but I expect to be satisfied as the price paid was excellent value. Thanks Krono and others for making it happen.

I think you’ve misunderstood something. What exactly was altered?

I did some searching, this is what happened, not only based on assumption that moon mode was not “low enough” or turbo not “high enough”:
3V - 8.V
Many members want it and BG/manufacture can sell extension, looks like win-win. Hooraayyy………
Then… DBCstm’s comment , Johnnymac’s comment.
Turn out the new driver is failed, at the end still 3V - 4.2V.

Thx argolite for the hint checking post #3318 lo and behold the driver in final sample light and production light is the same so we can forget the easy way out blaming the Chinese for tampering

I still think this is a killer deal. what can you buy for $20 that is better light? I can’t think of anything. Thanks Krono and others for making it happen.

The driver is not performing exactly as per spec. The sample also seemed to have better performance than the ones sold to all of us.

Bearing in mind the concepts of sample variation and measurement error, it isn’t realistic for every tester to get exactly the same result. Every report using a lightbox so far finds the brightness of the light to be on spec within standard error. This is the bottom line for me. With no physical difference in construction being identified so far, it’s unfair to say Eagle Eye altered anything from the approved sample. I am going camping tonight, but I have no plans to wow my friends by talking out a light and showing them a tailcap reading. Lumens is lumens.

Thanks to Krono, Dale, JM, and unknown for organizing and dealing with the bs. Sorry that the trolls are out in full force. Hope you realize that your time and effort are greatly appreciated.

So true, though the meeting was probably 4 voices all in one person’s head
I can’t seem to find it after a quick search, it was one of the samples that was producing less lumens on the AR glass then regular glass. I think it may have been a separate thread, not the JM thread but one of the other prototype testers.
It was approved out of frustration and having to settle for the fact the manufacturer would not meet the required specs after long term back and forth, i can’t blame Krono or other people who worked on this for that, they went to super human lengths and if that was not enough to break through chinese business ethos then thats life, not their fault.
I am glad we got most of what we want, i was hoping to not have to swap the driver but when i get a soldering iron someday i will take care of it

Got 3 NW’s hitting the mail box today! And a CW most likely showing up later this week! Can’t wait to get my hands on one (ok, that’s a lie, been waiting since July). I like small lights, and this one appears to fit the bill since the reflector will offer some throw. I gave up two spots on the lists so other members can get one of these little gems. I have no doubt that all 1,000 units will be sucked up soon. I plan on modding a CW and a NW, leaving the other 2 stock for now. Thanks Krono once again, and all those who helped with this amazing group buy. I think we learned a lot during this adventure, and hopefully we can put that knowledge to work in the future.

Of course Krono’s and all those involved efforts are all apreciated, no trolls here. That does not divert us from the fact that BG/EE did not deliver on what was promised. In the end it is a pretty damn good light for $20, high amps or not high amps. More battery life right?
