If I had to wait for snow to declare winter has arrived (December 21 in my location) I might miss it at all. It snows once in a while in the Mojave Desert and rarely stays around for more than a few hours. One exception was a few years ago when we got several inches of very heavy wet snow that brought down a lot of desert trees not accustomed to the weight. Not much fun cleaning up the mess.

There's something in the Northern Hemisphere called "meteorological winter" which starts on December 1st, but most people in the Northern Hemisphere call December 21st the first day of winter.

I guess it makes sense that the solstice is the first day but that’s the first time I’ve heard other people acknowledging it as so

German meteorologists define the first of December as the beginning of meteorological winter. :disappointed:

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the start of winter begins on December 1.
Meteorological seasons are far simpler than astronomical seasons.
