Ya know, I fly this flag on one of the two flagpoles I have on my house daily. I don’t have dedicated lights for my flags so I take them down every night and put them back up every morning. Now the flag above isn’t a confederate states flag, it’s a battle flag. I was born and raised in Missouri but spent lots of time with family on farms in rural Louisiana and Oklahoma. That flag to me means a way of life that is missing now days in this over sensitive world and something I am willing to fight for so my children will grow up knowing how to be respectful individuals. Yes ma’am, yes sir, thank you and nice to meet you are never phrases that need to be reminded to say in my house. You give respect and you get it in return. So that confederate battle flag reminds me everyday what I need to fight for to make my children good decent people who will never waver from what they are. They will never have to explain who they are nor apologize for it.

In the 30 plus years I have flown that flag I have only had a few people stop at my house to confront me about it. Two are still really good friends of mine to this day and the other three didn’t see the dead end sign at the end of the road.

Happy belated Independence Day from the other side of the pond. I grew up in the original Washington, the ancestral home of George Washington. It was just last year I visited Washington Old Hall again.

My eldest daughter is lucky enough to be experiencing the American way of life, soon to enter her second year at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia.

The thing is though, no matter what the flag means to you, the effect of displaying it in public is that people will associate with you, whatever it means to THEM. For every one who spoke to you about it, how many just made the association that was logical to them and moved on?

Whatever your intentions, the results are quite probably the opposite of what you would like.
We have the same situation here in S.A. where flying the old flag is seen in the same light as racist hate speech, regardless of whether the person flying it was just feeling a bit nostalgic for a way of life that may, for them, have had nothing whatsoever to do with race.
Without context, the flag means what it means to whoever can see it, and if that is not the intention, then to fly it is perhaps counterproductive.
Just something to be aware of.

Well I live in a place where I will not apologize for who I am. I don’t really care what people think of me. Everyone’s interpretation of that flag is their own issue, not mine.

I don’t have not a single intention when I fly that flag so the opposite of what I would like is pointless. I don’t have an intention. I fly it for my own reasons, not anyone else’s.

You are correct, the flag means what it means to whoever can see it, and since I have no intention, it can be neither counterproductive or productive. Seeing as I am not pushing an agenda on anyone.

I am a single solitary person that lives by my own values. I support what I want and stand for what I support. Now you can go on about this whole racist thing all you want, all that does is make it your problem not mine.

1) That wasn’t my point at all, the point is that people will make assumptions about you that DO NOT represent who you are. They will expect you to apologize for being someone else that they THINK you are.

Luckily in this day and age I don’t have to apologize nor will I for what they THINK I am. Again, that is entirely THEIR problem.

This social problem plays out everyday where there are people who fly a flag or have a belief that doesn’t suit an entirely different group of people’s feelings.

There are tons of flags, religions, ways of life, values, etc……… None of those have to answer for whatever color or flag they choose or choose not to fly. They also get to deal with the other side if they do decide to fly that flag or color.

I’ve chose mine. I assume nobody else would take theirs down so don’t expect me to.

Personally I would also display the Confederate flag , but only on a ’68 or ’69 Charger.
