I’m planning on tearing down the Zombie Slayinator. I plan on taking the cage and fan off and placing a handle on the head to hold it. I COULD use this hunting and place a red LED in it so that I can spotlight pigs at a distance. The red XP-E2 die size is so small, it would just be a pinpoint spot behind that 200mm lens. So, I got to thinking that maybe I could use a PT-121 red LED. Looking at the datasheet for the PT-121, it looks like the max amps is 30. The Vf is low, so can this LED be safely direct driven? I know heat is going to be the biggest pain to deal with, but hopefully the big copper heatsink can handle a lot of it. I’d like to delete the fan, but I will keep it if necessary. As I’ve never played with the PT-121 series, I honestly have no clue what amps it should run at or how bad the heat will be.
nobody?
I think you are on to somthing. once upon a time I was researching big Red led and at that time the Phatlight PT-54 was the king.
It seems that some folks would buy old LED projectors and salvage the big red led out of them.
It looks like you have found the upgraded size of it these days.
02 lumens
PS there is always the other route which is find a large red filter, it might be six on on hand and half a dzen on the other.
I’m likely going to make a light similar to the picture below out of the PVC head and the 200mm aspheric lens. All it would take would be adding a battery compartment and a handle. I’d likely run several 26650’s parallel in order to have respectable run time. I could use the momentary on switch that I already have and put it in the handle. I thought about putting a tripod mount on the bottom of the light also. For the driver, I could use a 3.04A linear driver and add on slave boards to up the amperage. I already have several of the 6A slave boards, so I could use 2 of them and the 3.04A driver and theoretically get around 15A to the LED. I just don’t know how much heat I will have to attempt to get rid of, or how long I can have it on before the copper heatsink becomes heat saturated. Ultimately, I’d like to have mode set up where I can put the spotlight on a tripod, locate some hogs at a long distance, and keep the light on them so that I can sneak up and put a bullet in their head.
or something like this tripod mounted spotlight
