Been reading for a couple of weeks decided to give modding a try. I used a uranus fire 2 x 18650 flashlight and put in a fet driver and a MT-G2 led in it. It didn’t really work well cause the threads in this thing are kind of loose its one of those pills that screws into the reflector and then screws into the head. Had issue with grounding sometimes it worked or I had to hit the head to get it to work very unpredictable. So what I did is took some 2mm copper solder wick and pulled it “Stretched it and put it on all the threads and it worked great. Damn thing is so bright it hurts my eyes and my wife is yelling at me to turn it off so i know it’s bright and working well.
I’m looking for advice for grounding problems. I was thinking of mixing up some artic silver “which doesn’t conducted electricity well” With some graphite powder. Do you think that would work well? Anyone ever tried this or maybe there is another product that would help conduct heat + electricity and not turn into a liquid and cause a mess. Sure the copper wick is working but seems like I could do something better or maybe what i did is great. I’m a newbie and don’t really know plus this thing gets HOT
I used to use solder paste on the aluminum threads. Clean all ano off contact area’s too. Sand it or like I do wire wheel it off. Now I use copper crush washer’s (hydraulic seals) they come in all different sizes and thickness, under the head of the aluminum pill. Also great for adding more pressure to the reflector when not using the centering ring, or when I use the star to center the reflector, that way the leads are inside the reflector,on my MT-G2 builds. I have a couple Industrial Hydraulic stores down the road from me, Exotic is one of them. Or you could get a cheap shim punch from Harbor Freight and some copper sheet and make your own too? Or if you have an old steel divider (used for laying out holes and circles on steel) you can sharpen one leg, and use that to cut copper sheeting, plastic sheeting anything thin and soft, and custom make your own. Just remember to cut the O.D. first, then the I.D.!! On brass pills I automatically solder up the threads, leaving the first couple threads alone to start the pill in, I had way too many pills cock on the thread slop and send my led axis off on an angle, how do I know, I put a very light coat spotting blue under the shoulder, and it left just a very small witness spot on the shelf, just another way of making sure you have full contact. Happy modding!!!
