I've been lurking here for a while, reading, learning, and losing lots that goes over my head. Hopefully I'll catch up quick.
I'm a flashlight junkie, and have been since about the age of 9 when my father gave me one of the earliest bits of advice I remember-
"Son, a man can never have too many pocket knives or flashlights."
Those words stuck with me, and now I have way too many of both. I'm largely a fan of Streamlight, but also have some Surefires and Maglites bumping around. I'm particularly keen to start learning about building and modding my own.
I look forward to getting to know you folks, and greatly appreciate the wealth of knowledge available here.
You also need to be prepared to start parting with significant amounts of money
While Streamlights and Surefires are great lights, have a go at some of the recommended budget lights you see around here- surprising quailty for the price! At some point also lash out and buy yourself a light cannon for fun! A DRY or an Ultrafire triple XML UF-T70 or a Skyray TR-J12. Just something to make you go "WOW"!!!.
Plus, Texas is a big place... big places need big lights......!!
Welcome to BLF, LSN!! You are going to enjoy your time here.
Your Dad is a smart man. I tell my son that all the time. He is going on 18 and always has the three essentials on his person like I taught him: fire, light & blade.
*sigh* Because after bow hunting, duck hunting, firearms/shooting, reloading, a penchant for handcrafted leather holsters, motorcycles, sailing, a budding interest in amateur telescope building and astrophotography, and the occasional tattoo, I REALLY NEED another expensive hobby....
Welcome, fellow Texas. I don't think you have to spend a fortune though.
For me, I have lights in the following categories:
a) A keychain light. For me its an XM-L emitter CR123 light with a rechargable battery. I always have it with me so no need for a car light. It was 40 bucks.
b) Around the house light. Actually I use a cheapo 10 dollar Flood to Throw. I love the nice even lighting wiht no hotspot and it makes a great worklight.
c) A big light OR high throw light (or both). My TK70 did cost a lot! 200 bucks. It doubles as a club. But anyways there are some very nice budget offerings that have multiple XM-Ls. They don't throw quite as well as the TK70 but they are WAY cheaper for similar light output. I actually like my TK70 now for working around the house. Its insanely bright but has 4 modes. AND best part is that I dont actually shine it on what Im looking at. I just point it whereever I want a 'virtual' 200 Watt bulb to magically appear. :-) I shine it on the back wall and now I can see everything behind the TV just fine...hands free!
d) Car light - Some like having a car light. I use a keychain instead.
e) Bike light - I use 2 cheapo flood to throws for my bike.
