Help building driver

*OK first attempt at building a MT-G2 light.
I guess right now i am debating if i want a WOW light or a Sleeper.
The wow light would be a P60 Solarforce or Surefire, The sleeper would be a UF C8 host on a Alu Pill.
I have both choices in front of me and need to decide which one to use, lets help me make the decision ?
I want to use what i have, and the last thing i need is a Qlite Driver but am unsure how many 7135 chips to add? The driver alone is already 3A and the MTG2 5000k 16mm on a nocitgon star. I am shooting for this output: 2116-2232lumens @ 3000mA 25°C as long as i am in or around 2 thousand lumens i am happy. So could i get some help?

Driver in question: Qlite driver
LED That i have: MT-G2 5000k

PS.

I will be wanting to use either 2x PURPLE18350s or RED18650s and they are IMR EFEST
and DRjOnez Firmware is my #1 choice.*

UPDATE did some reading and can i run that driver with just one battery?
I see the driver max input is 8v…so that means 2x 18350s or 18650s would nuke the driver right?

For an mtg you need a Zener modded Qlite and 2 x 18350 in either host. The
C8 will handle the heat a little better than a p60 but even at 3A both will get hot since the mtg is twice the wattage at the same current as an XM or XP.

my plan is to run the qlite with memory always starting at moonmode that way if i want to you know light something up i just click the switch a few times to the desired brightness. so is one 7135 chip good enough? will i get the full 2k lumens?

I assume you mean if you add one 7135 to the 8 already on the Qlite?

With one extra chip out the front lumens should be around 2000 depending on where in the bin that led is and how good your reflector and lens are and how well the cells can sustains the current. It should be hot and bright. Binned output is sort of like auto gas mileage.

Personally I’ve held 25watts of power in a P60 and it didn’t work very well heat-wise. I’d definitely go with the C8. It should give a better beam too.

So forget adding a 7135 to the qlite. Just use it with the 3.04a that it produces and I should be fine. Yea decided to go the c8 route and I already started sanding the pill and cleaning it up real good.

I don’t think the pill needs work if you’re using a 16mm star. The reflector is what you need to open up for the MTG. For a little better heatsinking, I’d apply thermal grease between pill and head on final assembly and screw it in tightly. Don’t forget, you’ll need to modify your Qlite.

Something to watch for with MT-G2s in these lights are what you have to do to the reflector. As it’s a wider LED, drilling out the reflector can make the diameter of the whole large enough to cause shortages over the solder points on the MCPCB. Make sure you watch out for that and use some tape or similar to prevent it.

Already widened the reflector a few mm and I will use LEATHER as a spacer. What do you mean mod Qlite ? I am buying it from mountain electronics. All I need to do is sand it down little for it to for a 17mm pill.

The convoy M1 is nice in that the reflector hole already fits the mtg and it has room for a 20mm star so reflector shorts to the solder pads aren’t an issue.

If you are buying from mtnelectronics.com, be sure to get the zener modified version. Otherwise you will need to do the modification yourself.

Hopefully these load

copper ring inserted in pill

i was thinking of grounding down a few pennies to 14mm in diameter then using some solder that takes some serious heat ill use a torch and solder the pennies in side the pill then drill the two holes out for the driver wires…is that over kill? Its something i was going to do with a P60. also there is no way to Screw down the MTG2 Noctigon as it is a 16mm and doesnt have 4 slots like the 20mm…:frowning: i wonder why that is? i ordered the mtg2 from intloutdoors. The p60 is just being used for illustration of the reflector. IMHO p60 mtg2 sucks for throw

I don’t think so, I’ve done similar with copper washers. But the longer it takes to heat up, the longer it takes to cool down. So how much you should put in kind of depends on how you plan on using it. I have a Convoy M1 without any copper in it, heats up fast but cools down quicker than my copper “enhanced” MT-G2 light of similar size.

yes, makes sense/
