Help me pick a solid, 18650 light-thrower?

I’ve got a few lights I’ve picked out over the last few weeks. Just not 100% sure which to place the money on.

Convoy C8

Small Sun ZY-T08

Convoy L4

Jacob A60

HD2010

I looking for a flashlight with

  • mode memory
  • throw (I’m not a big fan of pencil beams)
  • <$35
  • cool (not a big fan of warm)

I dislike having to cycle through 5 modes to turn a flashlight off. I really like the L4’s side switch + rear clicky combo… though I’m leaning more towards the C8 currently, because of price and beamshots I’ve seen.

I was also wondering if anyone has had any luck getting FT to stick some taped 18650’s in their lights to avoid the whole shipping fiasco?

-Extra info: I may buy an A60 and mod it in a few months, not quite sure if I want to allow myself to get addicted to modding though. :stuck_out_tongue:

HD2010 is bright and throwy, but no mode memory.
Jacob A60 throws well but has a pencil beam.
L4 has mode memory - yay!
T08 is very throwy but no mode memory.

Everyone should have a C8, I have three.

I don’t mind no memory. It’s next-mode memory that is annoying. Fortunately it can often be disabled with a resistor mod.

I might be a bit confused on mode memory, I have a cheap zoomy and an L2i with 5 mode. They both have what I understand to be mode memory. I.e. they will remember what mode they are in if after being turned off and turned on 3-4 seconds later they will be in the same mode; however if they are turned back on before that 3-4 seconds has passed then they will turn back on in the next mode.

That is next mode memory and it stinks.

The Jacobs in pencil thin. The convoy C8 is supposed to be a great light. Small with a nice combination of flood and throw, but not a real thrower. HD2010 was very popular for a while but the new ones are hit and miss with some being very underdriven. The L4 is also supposed to be a very good light but I haven’t owned one.

The ZY-T08 is still a nice size light it’s a real thrower with plenty of useable spill. It’s not overdriven by any means, but I think that it’s simply a great light in fact it’s one of my all time favorites. I do mod them but I also love it stock. Stock you get all kinds of battery time and it’s really a good thrower. If you ever do get into modding you can make it into a true beast of a light. I have modded a few and I have two more on the way. I just got done walking with one a bit ago.

The 3-4 seconds is not generally thought of as a type of memory, but of course it is sort of a memory. It is necessary for a light to remember what mode it is in, if only for a few seconds, so that it can change to the next one when you activate the switch to change modes.

The kind of memory that you described above is called next-mode memory and it can become annoying rather quickly. :Sp It’s called that because it not only remembers what mode it was in when turned off, but then it changes to the next mode when it is turned on.

Standard memory is when the light remembers what mode it was in when turned off, and turns on in the same mode. Some like this, and I like it too, when the light has only a few modes. But some don’t like it because it means you need to cycle through the modes to get back to a previous one.

The other main type is no memory, other than the two or three second one described above. A light with no memory always comes on in the same mode when turned off for more than a few seconds. This can be nice, but it depends a lot on whether the mode or modes you prefer are early in the rotation. For example, I like a H-M-L mode order and no memory for an outdoor light that I want to come on in high. But for a light used mainly indoors I like a L-M-H arrangement with no memory, or at least a standard memory so that I can leave the light in low or medium and have it turn on in that mode.

Everyone has different use cases for their lights so much of this can be quite subjective. But most would agree that next-mode memory is the least liked of them all.

Might be a bit nit-picky, but what do you think of the shape of the grip, comfort-wise?

It’s very comfortable to my hand. You just naturally end up with the rounded part in the palm of your hand with your fingers wrapped around the other rounded part. I don’t notice the flat part at all.

Oh and another thing on it. It tailstands perfectly and you will actually find yourself using the bottom from time to time in a cigar type hold with your thumb on the button or at least I do all the time.

Oh… woops; I think I described it poorly. Mine sound like no memory then, unless I’m completely dense with it being 3am, which is highly possible.

Turn off in Strobe, turn back on a day later and it’s in strobe.
Turn off in Strobe, turn back on in less than 3 seconds switched to SoS.

Basically, if you don’t wait longer than 3 seconds to turn it back on, then it just acts like you slightly depressed and released the switch to purposefully change modes.

But yeah, I’d be happy with anything other than next-mode; I have a feeling that would bug the heck out of me.
-Thanks for all the info!

zy-t08 is a brilliant design, I love both my zy-t08 and my asgard, infact my asgard lives in a holster in my day sack that travels everywhere with me.

convoy l4 has a c8 reflector I believe, try to bare in mind, if you want a throwy c8, you need to hunt down an xp-g or xr-e or get seriously into modding it.

if you can stretch your budget a little, the convoy l2 is an awesome light and well worth a look, I do have to admit though that I just buy it as a host and spec it out myself.

Awesome! I think I’ll probably go for a C8 and a ZY-T08. I’ll just have to haul in the aluminum cans a bit early.

Oh, have you happened to try some Panasonic 3400mAh NCR18650B batteries in the ZY-T08? I’m curious about the fitment.

As much as I’d like to I can’t quite justify ~$50 for a single flashlight. Though that L2 does look rather awesome.

it takes down from a two cell light to a one cell light in standard form…….its two lights lol

Convoy L4.

They fit no problem at all.

Awesome! It seems like my cheap zoomy is just about the only thing NCR18650B’s don’t like.

A Small Sun ZY-T13 is good also if you like plunger style. Didn’t think I would at first, but I absolutely love this light.
