For the past 21 years or so I have had a static .248 subnet internet connection. Several different providers and several different pieces of owned or rented ISP connection starting with a Cisco 675 DSL modem. Always in what I understood as bridge mode. Typically I would have 1 or two routers connected to a switch connected to the WAN port. Ran software firewall on devices connected directly without going through the router. In simplistic terms that I could understand I had 1 ethernet connection and anything connected to that could be configured manually with the .248 subnet.
My new fiber connection does something that I only partially understand. They will serve up one static IP to me. That IP will not be part of my .248 subnet but will encapsulate my entire .248 subnet within that IP address. I will need a router, with a MAC address, that can then route my .248 subnet. If I can do this with my ASUS router I don’t know the correct terminology to find where I could set this up. I am used to setting up NAT for my LAN but don’t know how to do it for the WAN and then of course to the LAN from there. I assume I will need a more serious piece of hardware to do this.
Part of my plan for the fiber is to run a video conferencing server and I was planning on doing that through a hardware VPN so I guess I would be in the class of equipment that could do that as well as route my other 4 useable static IPs. Was thinking of an Ubiquiti UDM as I am pretty sure it would do it but I am not completely thrilled with the USG I currently have at a client site — the unifi AP is fantastic however.
Waiting to get rental pricing on a ZYXEL VPN 300 from the ISP if the rental is reasonable perhaps that is the way to go. The VPN 50 if I were to buy it;-) My needs are not all that great. Basically I just need the ability to route my static IPs and have a hardware VPN server. Currently only looking at 100Mbs up down. Will rarely be over a few concurrent users. One static IP will just be used for typical household stuff and WiFi. Another static for my web server and then eventually another static for the VPN server. The remaining two statics are only occasionally used.
I know there are so many on this list who have great experience and far more knowledge than I have. I am just an old hack who has been doing this for a very long time and now technology is a bit in front of me;-) If any of you would be so kind as to point me in a good direction I will be very grateful!
Thanks,
Wade
