One of my mates has asked me to make up a light for him. Basically the only requirements he has given me are a strong pencil beam with no spill, black coloured host and possibly the ability to be mounted to his compound bow (so I assume it needs to be relatively small/lightweight). I have already explained to him the limited practical uses for a light like this but thats what he wants so thats what he will get haha.
Obviously I am looking at a host with an aspheric lens and preferably one with out zooming ability. Either a single 18650 or RCR123a. Now i’m thinking about what options would be available in a P60 host as I know there are plenty of good throwing drop-ins available. However, not having a P60 sized host myself I am not sure how small they are and whether they could be mounted to a compound bow? But a de-domed XP-G2 or XP-E on copper driven hard with an Ahorton P60 sized aspheric lens could be a winner.
So essentially what are my options for this sort of request? I need it to be small but throw as far as possible.
As for budget, its not really a great concern but probably would be good to keep it under $100.
Na really just to see things at night. Wants to be able to take it off to spot things as well as using it with his bow. Also the green/blue high powered type lasers are illegal over here so that rules them out.
Ok, let me play devil’s advocate here. With a pencil beam, generally speaking, you are not going to be able to spot things as easily as if you were using a flood beam.
haha I’m with you and I tried to explain that to him. I showed him the difference between my de-domed XP-G2 zooming C8 and my XinTD C8 V4 and he wanted the narrow no spill type light that the de-domed XP-G2 provided. As I said this is not for me, personally I wouldn’t want it but I gave him the other options and he was still adamant about the pencil beam. He is paying for it so I will just do what he wants.
How far he wants to shoot, that is the question. If it's up to 50-60meters any flood beam will do it and still be able to see something else rather than a point.
Honestly, it doesn’t really matter. He wants to be able to use it standalone as well and really just wants something that is small and throws a tight narrow beam as far as possible.
go with the L2(or clone) and the Ahorton, perfect for a compound bow.
Although for my own use i would mount a T20 to the stabilizer and then you got the best of both worlds… spot or flood and a good light for hand use when needed.
Sounds like a P60 is not the right choice but an FTT Aspheric would be. It would also be a lot more versatile like Kevind43 suggested. I also agree that a T20 would be a great start.
