Help opening Astrolux FT03! (Update: Freezing worked!)

Help! I have an original FT03 with the not green at all SST-40, and I just received a couple SFT-40 3000k.

Seems pretty straight forward right? WRONG!!

What kind of demonic glue they used to secure that bezel??

I’ve tried strap wrenches, vice grips with leather belts, running the light hot on turbo, isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue, WD-40…

I’ve used an old leather belt and it tore!

The only thing I haven’t tried is cold. Putting it in the freezer overnight but I’m afraid the lens will break.

Anything I haven’t tried??

Have you tried a hacksaw? /s

I think your way of using a strap wrench is the way to go, it just takes more force. At some point it will suddenly move.

goodness, mine wasn’t loose but this looks a bit tedious haha

This is no help at all but i remember both of mine coming of easy enough.

People use a rubber glove or a mouse pad?

@Maverick1947 When I’ve run into similarly difficult cases where strap wrenches and the other typical methods we use have failed, I found that the grip-torque achieved from using thick, heavy-duty PVC-coated gloves made the difference. I have these Blue PVC gloves from Home Depot, https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Blue-Long-Cuff-Reusable-PVC-Coated-L-XL-24122-08/319285649#overlay.

As long as the FT03 is placed into your freezer at room temperature, I personally wouldn’t worry that the lens will crack, albeit the risk has to be yours.

If you have or can get a similar pair of the gloves referenced above, there’s a good chance that after the flashlight has been in the freezer overnight, then hopefully the gloves will give you what it takes to break the adhesive bond without worrying about damage to the finish. If that still doesn’t work, then you’ll at least have a good pair of heavy-duty, waterproof gloves available for other household tasks!

No hacksaw, but my next move will be a blowtorch lol. Can’t be tight if it’s a liquid.

I guess I will try the gloves next! Will update.

Consider tapping it lightly on the rim edges with a screw driver to break the seal.

That’s a good one!

How about trying a heat gun all around the bezel and then using oven mitts?

I’ve had success in the past with those jar opener gripper pads.

I’m surprised the strap wrench didn’t work. Those things have a lot of grip and leverage. Was yours just slipping? If so, maybe try putting something between the bezel and the strap to increase the grip.

Give it a few freeze/thaw cycles to make the glue brittle. Heating could also help.

This is my way too. So far worked every time however sometimes I had to sacrifice 30 minutes to open at last.

2 strap wrenches (they are directional so make sure to place them correctly and opposite to each other) and a hot air gun. Even the red goo surrenders.

On the other hand… First time I can see glued FT03. Had like 10 of them and none had the bezel glued

Threadlocker on a flashlight.

Yes. They offered a lot of grip initially but eventually slipped… I ll try something different.

I’ll try heating just a little bit more. Don’t have a hot gun per se but got a soldering station with that small heat gun attached. Should work as well. Thanks

I have some strap wrenches like that yellow one. Two of the same strap wrenches might work.

As with @1stein’s ~10 FT03’s, mine was also free of any adhesive as I was able to remove the bezel ring with bare hands.

Therefore, it seems that something more unusual than the bezel ring being over-tightened or glued is at play for it to not budge!

So I’m wondering if an imperfection in the threading or a tiny piece of loose metal became lodged during factory assembly, either of which could cause a “Morse Taper/cold weld-like” situation. Assuming that’s the case, twisting the ring back & forth could possibly break it free. Just a thought!

Well. Update. Tried with the heat gun. I got it waaayy hotter than before only running it on turbo for a few minutes…

No luck. It got so hot that a strange smell was coming from it.

Not only it did not open but it kinda melted my strap wrench. lol.

Next step is the freezer.

Not even my BLF GT was this difficult. Really impressed.

Well done Astrolux Glue Guy.

If you use the right Permatex thread locker, it wont come apart even if you put it in a coal fired pizza oven.

It feels like it’s one solid piece of aluminum! Tried both ways to maybe break the glue a little but it does not budge… let’s freeze the GD thing. See what happens. But I don’t know… it may appear that this light will forever have the sst -40

Stay there and think of your sins…
