Help! Somehow I have an actual torch!

So I seem to have fixed my grounding issues in this light for the most part by using aluminum foil on all the threads. So now its pretty damn bright and putting out some power and it’s even reliable.

But it smokes. Like a torch.

See below.

It’s an MT-G2 with a FET driver but i’m not using high discharge batteries multimeter at tail reads about 5-5.5 amps usage. Nothing great.

I have let it run like this for 5 minutes straight on high it smokes the entire time! I can’t go much longer than that is the head gets SUPER hot. It starts smoking after about 30 seconds on high.

I can find no arcs. It doesn’t smell electrical. I don’t hear anything just smoke and it doesn’t even smell bad it does have a smell but nothing like i have ever smelled!

I am using Arctic Silver Premium Silver Thermal Cooling Adhesive Set (ASTA-7G) to secure the mcpcb to the pill. Could that be smoking? I didn’t use that much it’s 26mm i got a pretty thin coat.

Or maybe Kapton tap? Thou I can’t find any evidence of it melting. I even took a piece of kapton tape and burned it with a lighter you can see it melts but the smell isn’t the same. Maybe i should heat some Kapton tap up in a pill on an old fry pan see if the smell matches.

Excess flux? I cleaned everything out with alcohol I don’t see any excess flux. I keep turning it on and hoping whatever it is will just burn away but not happening :frowning: I’ve done this several times just letting it run for 5 minutes cool off do it again. I’ve done this at least 10 times now.

Anyone have any ideas please help me. I

I’d guess some sort of lube or oil on the LED or that area.

It could actually be contact cleaner I used when trying to fix this grounding issue. It’s not on the actual led but it’s on the threads thou I thought I wiped it off. If that is it should burn off soon enough.

I’ll keep lighting up the uranusfire hehe love that name never gets old!

Good thought thanks!

I took the reflector/pill assembly out and hooked up to an external DC power source it did not smoke at all it’s oil or something in the actual flashlight body. I think i’ll heat it up in the oven to 350 put the head without the the led/driver assembly pill and the tube in there an burn off whatever is in this thing.

Probably some toxic Chinese chemical. hahaha

O-ring from reflector burning? LED dome after kapton tape stuck to it and melted part of your dome?

Pull apart, and wash with a tooth brush and dish soap?

not coming from my melted dome that problem was so 2 days ago.

This thing is going in the garbage when i’m done chalk it up to my learning mod.

BTW here is the beam shot you can see it’s crap.

The thing is smoking in the oven!

Led dome just flaked off. It’s now dedommed. looks like crap I wanted a floody.
Guess it was coming from that at least some of the smoke was. Don’t know why tonight it just decided to start burning down again.

Anyway no more smoke!

It’s still pretty bright.
