Help with Angel Eye project

Hey guys I’m wanting to do a project for my truck headlights, the project I want to do is to make a pair of Angel Eyes ??

If anyone can point me into the direction of a driver or anything I can use to power them so they don’t blow ? And other things I might need TIA

I don’t know if he’s up for selling automotive drivers or not, but I know Richard at Mountain Electronics at least has access to them. He started selling his own premium LED light bars a while back. He has a website set up separately for those called Mountain LITEbar but he doesn’t have drivers listed on that site, nor does he have automotive drivers listed at Mountain Electronics. Perhaps he would help you out if you ask him. He’s usually quite helpful. Let us know if he does, so others can get some too. You’re the second person I’ve recommended to ask Richard about automotive drivers, and I haven’t heard back from the first guy. It would be good to know if he can/will source these drivers or not.

EDIT: Also, I’d be interested to see a build thread on your Angel Eyes when you get the project going.

Finally a topic I know a thing or two about

Are you planning on modding existing headlights, building a new set or buying new ones? First of all, from my experience the technical requirements within a vehicular environment are very different from a flashlight. Factors to consider are i.e. heat cycles, NVH, shock resistance, road worthiness, technical approval measures (DOT/NHTSA, E-mark, TÜV, others, …), and how light behaves in a traffic scenario (very strict tests and approvals are done for them).

If you want angel lights only (the halos) for your existing headlamps, there are kits out there specifically for cars and trucks. They come with full connectors, ballast, harness and potentially resistors or anything you might need. It is up to your jurisdiction to see how legal that set would be. These kits are probably more cost-efficient than building your own halos from scratch.

Otherwise there are also aftermarket headlights for your car as full lights. They have all kinds of features depending on how much you’d like to spend and they are typically tested and DOT approved.

Yeah, most countries will not allow any light except for forward facing white lights (head lights) and amber for indicators. Even the light emission wavelengths, frequencies, PWM and lots of other things are regulated (as it should be). Typically, only larger commercial vehicles have additional amber positioning lights and special vehicles like ambulances and police have other colors.

However, if you can switch the additional light colors off while the vehicle is in operation it might be legal in some jurisdictions (most aftermarket lights these days come with bluetooth remote controls or even mobile apps).

Show cars need these lights to stand out or to represent the brand or manufacturer of aftermarket parts for shows and exhibitions (ie SEMA). Other than that, it is all about personal taste.
