Hi, I just got this yesterday from T-Mart for $6.99. It seems like a good one, it’s quite bright and has mode memory, although this is my first P60 light. Anyway, I was trying to center the LED in the reflector and somehow, the LED came off the MCPCB!!
So is this what you call a ‘reflow’? I’ve never done that and wonder if this is even something I can do, considering I have a weak-@$$ 25w Radio Shack soldering iron.
Tallboy, just get a new emitter on Noctigon from Richard, you’ll be a lot better off.
Or you can send that star and emitter to me and I’ll reflow it for you. But at the very least don’t reflow it back onto aluminum, not worth the solder paste. Put it on a Noctigon or SinkPAD.
And for the record, that so called 1000 lumens will be doing good to get 500-600 Out The Front.
Yes it can be done. I have done all of mine on the stove top with a cast iron pan & temp gun. If you have a heat gun & solder paste you cant do it that way also.
i use small pan, may be 4” no bigger, i reflowed may be 50 or so leds on it. very simlpe task. i use small burner, first minute i keep the fire on lowest setting, in my oven it is 1. than i slowly raise temp, but never higher than 2,5, (the highest is 6). as soon as paste starts to melt, and turns silver color, i use toothpick to move led a bit, if it returns to proper position, i shut oven off.
Probably not the best way, but I couldn’t get enough heat transferred from my iron cranked all the way up and placed under the star so I flipped it upside down and dropped a blob of molten solder on the center, flipped it right side up and dropped the emitter down on top. Had enough time to situate it and press it down. Then I just simply let it cool down and flicked the solder off the underside of the Alu star.
I’m getting really good at reacting so fast when I accidentally grab/touch extremely hot things that I don’t get burned.
That first time I accidentally let the iron rest on my knuckle for a millisecond and burnt the crap out of it really learned me well.
I've used a torch to heat a pill with the led on the star resting where it would normally be in the pill. Just gently heat the pill and that will spread the heat so the star heats up more evenly. Once the emitter has flowed into place, remove heat and let cool.
