Hi!!

How does anyone know if this member is a Male or Female?
Welcome...I honestly didn't know we had any female members. Nice to have your opinions here!
Well, Chloe is traditionally a girl's name...

but some people think that Khloé Kardashian looks like a dude:

Hiya Chloe,

Are you stalking me?? LOL

Welcome to the forum, they’re a nice bunch here, as you can see from all the answers above, helpful too.

Take care

Welcome Chloe.

Welcome! I’ve only joined recently too, after using BLF and CPF for months as shopping references. Lots of good info here. However, it’s a little strange being one of the few girls here. Try not to get eaten by the wolves.

As for your torch needs, the easiest way to get a lot of light from a small package is to use Li-Ion cells, probably 18650 style (or 14500 for AA size). 1x18650 lights are significantly larger than 1xAA lights, but they’re capable of much greater output and runtime. If you don’t have any, you might want to grab some nice Sanyo or Panasonic 18650 cells and a charger (Nitecore i4 or i2 intellicharger is good).

From there, lots of 1x18650 lights are decent, such as the already-mentioned Convoy S3 / “EDC 18650” or some cheaper variants like HD2011 or UF-2100. But perhaps the nicest light of this type is the Zebralight SC600. It’s great aside from its military drab color.

My personal favorite light is the 1xAA Zebralight H51, which I keep clipped to my purse facing forward for hands-free use. It’s also very convenient when worn as a necklace, though it’s not remotely fashionable hanging there on a shoelace. Ugly color, but ridiculously useful. Or, for the normal flashlight version of it, the ZL SC52 is probably the brightest and most versatile 1xAA/1x14500 light on the market. Small, output from 0.01 to 500 lumens, nice UI. Still an ugly color though.

Sorry to keep mentioning Zebralights… they’re not pretty like the Solarforce X2 (or Klarus MiX6). But there’s really nothing else like them, since nearly every product they make is best in its class for output, runtime, variety of modes, and UI. It’s a shame they’re all so ugly.

Anyway, I hope you find everything you’re looking for here.

There are at least a few of us. We don’t tend to mention it much though, since it immediately makes the discussion about gender instead of torches.

For example.

And so on.

Wow, so many replies! Thank you all for welcoming me! ^ー^

Rufusbduck, thanks for the suggestion! I just prefer clicky because I can turn them on with one hand. It’s a shame because there are lots of lovely looking twisty torches, more than clicky it seems. ;_;

Ah okay. The P1d sounds great but do I have to power it with a 18650? I am too scared to use rechargable lithium batteries. They seem really high maintenance and I’ve read about some awful accidents.

Thanks, Ramblings! I think I’d prefer plain black for the larger torch. I don’t want to draw too much attention to the torch (a bit paranoid I know but I don’t live in the nicest of areas). I have a large handbag which goes with me almost everywhere and the L2P looks like it will fit. ^ー^

The Preon’s look quite nice but I’m not sure about 2AAA just yet. They look like pens.

Hi, gords1001! I don’t have any, and I don’t think I will get any either. They’re just too scary. I know I have things that use lithium cells but seems like these batteries require much more care.

Oh, what are your germ factories??? o.O

Hi!!! It’s nice to see you here. No I’m not stalking you! xD

Hi ToyKeeper! I thought about joining CPF too but they do seem to like much more expensive lights. I’m glad there are other females here too. ^ー^

Thanks for mentioning the Zebralight. It sounds like a great idea to be able to wear it like that! Often I find myself carrying things in both hands plus the torch instead of turning on the “big light” and end up with it hanging from my wrist, lighting the floor. >.<

What colour is it? On my netbook it looks like a grey-brown, but grey in some pics too. It is ugly but I guess there is some beauty in strict utilitarian looks. It doesn’t look overly “tactical” like some torches, with all the silly extra bits. Also, how is the clip? I ask because the clip on my Sipik is utterly useless and would probably tear anything I try to attach it to.

Welcome to BLF

Hello Ms./Mrs./Miss Chloe

Lithiums need not be scary, its all in what you buy and how you use it,protected lithiums with a good charger and sensible lights are in my opinion as safe as your mobile or laptop - your already using them.

Germ factories = small children  Mrs gords and the rest if the clan has been ill enough to paint a red cross on the door :frowning:

I’ll post some links tomorrow, but after the initial battery/charger set up, the lights are mu h cheaper for much more compact high output. On alkaline/nimh set ups, you need at least 3 cells to get close to 800 lumen, on lithium, the same output can happily sit in your purse.

Please don’t confuse me with the low functioning lab fodder. It’s like me implying you come from Taz. :stuck_out_tongue:

Tazzies aren't offended at all by that statement. Nup, not one bit. :_(...

They’re probably safer than alkalines (which are notorious for leaking), or at least less likely to damage the items you power them with. Not as safe as NiMH batteries though. The main thing is that they have different charge / long-term-capacity behavior. An Eneloop / NiMH works best and retains the most capacity over time when it is completely discharged before refilling. However, I’ve found that Li-Ion batteries live the longest when they’re kept close to full, and each complete discharge may reduce the overall capacity. So, with NiMH batteries you should empty them completely but Li-Ion batteries should generally be refilled sooner (whenever it’s convenient).

Either one works pretty well. I like how cheap NiMH batteries are, but it’s kind of annoying trying to squeeze the last bit of juice out of them before I can recharge. I like being able to recharge Li-Ion whenever it’s convenient for me, which reduces the need to carry extra batteries. Eneloops will probably last more years than Li-Ion though, if you get far enough to care about that.

The colour varies, but it’s generally a matte greyish brownish greenish colour similar to military drab. With some retailers, you can request that they give you a relatively light or dark shade of yuck, but that’s the extent of colour choice you get.

For wearing a H51, what I did was attach a small piece of double-sided velcro to a wide, stretchy shoelace. The velcro wraps around the torch, and the shoelace adjusts in length by using a cable lock. It works pretty well as a necklace, head strap, or anywhere else it’ll fit. I also keep a small neodymium magnet on a zipper pull on my purse so I can attach the light (via clip+magnet) to metal surfaces, which allows full 180+360 degree aiming. But I mostly use it as a necklace, since that’s the most convenient and it can easily aim up or down as necessary.

One could also get the same effect by clipping it to a button-up shirt, but I don’t recall the last time I wore one of those.

FWIW, I think this is the velcro I used: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000078CUB/ … It’s a bit stiff, but it works well. I can leave this around the light when it’s clipped to my purse.

The clip is removable by pulling, so it isn’t nearly as strong as a SK-68 clip. However, it’s fairly stiff so I haven’t had any issues with it detaching by accident. The main issue is that putting the clip on tends to scuff the anodization a bit over time.

FWIW, I find it most useful at the 0.2, 2.2, and 7 lumen settings… unless I’m biking, in which case 86lm is nice. Around the house at night, I tend to run it at 2 lumens in necklace mode and then I don’t really have to care about lighting for the rest of the evening. I’m weird though; I find that “normal” lighting hurts and makes me sleepy, so I prefer a moonlight level of illumination when possible.

The last person on here called chloe looked like this

Welcome to BLF

Nup, not from Tassie and never been there. I would love to go there though as they say roads are built for bikes.

My ex-girlfriend, happychloe!

I’ve ridden Tassie twice. A must for motorcyclists.
Edit: it’s Awesome ! I used to spend Sundays on the Victorian Spurs, have ridden in 3 countries, Tassie is great !
They say that when the creator finished the world he/she/it had a lot of road left over so crammed it all into the island. There are no straight bits !

Suncoaster MAAAAAAAATTTTTEEEEEE. You just got me excited. I live virtually on the Black Spur and the Reefton Black Spur. Before I had kids I would come home twice a week during daylight savings and go for a ride. Theres also a couple off good short rides around Healesville. For those that dont know this area is fantastic for its scenery and also trail bike riding. Not to take this off topic do you or your boyfriend ride bikes Chloe?

MRsDNF MAAATTE !
Do you still get out for a blast ?

I left Vic some years ago but my fave road was the Black Spur.
I now live in SEQLD which is harley (Fat bikes for Fat blokes) country.

You need to do Tassie.
Get your wife to drive the support vehicle !
Go and book it now !

Sorry about the off topic chatter Chloe, but that’s pretty common around here.
And welcome.

Hi Chloe and welcome to BLF ! ! !
