Home Depot Hacked AGAIN!

This time the criminals used a third-party vendor’s user name and password to get into their network. They then used custom built malware on its self-checkout registers (Gulp) in the US and Canada. They got 53 million email address but no passwords.
Wanna guess how share prices were affected on this news? They went UP 1.6% :~

http://recode.net/2014/11/06/home-depot-says-53-million-email-addresses-were-stolen/

I never use those Self Checkouts because they put good people out of work.

Funny thing is Home Depot is one of the biggest pushers of those things.
One time this HD guy is giving me a hard time for not using it, so I told him how it sucks and costs jobs. Came back later and tried the stupid thing and guess what? The thing hung up and guess who had to come over there and fix it? Mr. SelfDick, Funny as hell when he saw me.

If they are so good, why do they have to have a human there to fix the problems?

And I have no pity on the grocery stores that say they get ripped off by self checkout customers, you asked for it, now suck it up.

Home Despot is an awful company. Years ago I ordered a Husky large tank air compressor online from them because I didn’t want to load it into the truck. 2 weeks later it hadn’t shipped from my local HD a couple miles away, and after another week on the phone trying ot figure out what was going on, I finally demanded a full refund. They said I’d have my refund within a couple hours and when I didn’t get the refund I called back to ask why, and oops, it had already shipped. Another week later, and 4 weeks after I ordered something that was supposed to ship from down the street, it finally arrived. There’s a Lowe’s across the street from this Home Despot. Yeah, I just go to Lowe’s.

I agree, they want to not pay employees and not have any consequences, as much as i would not condone stealing its not like international businesses can’t afford a few employees, cry me a river if they have to forgo an ivory back scratcher or another solid gold bar or second or third helicopter

I laugh at walmart losing sales because they don’t want to pay employees to stock the shelves so customers can’t buy those items.

I dunno, perhaps the self-checkout at the bank and the stockbroker also got hacked?

It’s starting to sound like the economy is being pumped up with fairy gold that turns to autumn leaves by morning.

Same here... We have a small Wal-Mart Supercenter and a small HEB close to each other where I live. Since we moved here almost a year ago, we have been shopping at the HEB almost exclusively. The Wal-Mart is extremely poorly stocked, and one of the worst I've ever seen, even though it's fairly new. The HEB is always better stocked, with better quality products, and is still competitively priced. In some cases, the prices are significantly BETTER than those at Wal Mart. We shop there for everything we can, including non-grocery items.

Funny story: Shortly after we moved here, my wife and I visited Wal-Mart (not yet aware of the HEB's convenience) to pick up a few items, including a head of lettuce. Wal-Mart didn't have ANY lettuce in the produce department, so we were frustrated and discussing our options, including making a stop at the HEB when a guy behind us overheard our conversation. He introduced himself, as a Manager from the HEB down the road. He had overheard his customers talking about how bad things were at WalMart and had come to see for himself. He told us "We have lettuce". We drove to HEB where we found lots of FRESH lettuce, and we have been shopping there ever since.

At Home Depot I always checkout through the "contractors" area since there's always a human cashier there. I like having self-checkouts, but hate that I am pushed into using them. The Walmart near my office had them, got rid of them (due to too much theft I believe), and now they are back, however I'm not forced to use them at all. I've had frustrating experiences trying to use them on odd items where they didn't ring up at the proper discounted price and then at the "regular human attended checkout" they tell me "oh, yeah these things won't ring up right over there". We don't (yet) have self-checkouts at the Walmart nearest my house.

...and forget about buying ammo through the self checkout...

Self service means NO service!

I really hate HD. When I go there in the evening, there is literally one cashier and they seem to make the cashier do other work like find things for customers so no one is available on cashier lines. So for the giant store they have 2 employees on duty.

…once I couldnt find anyone in the store literally when I wanted to buy a garage door. Just wander around aimlessly in each department looking for an employee.

True. In my area its crazy they dont even give you plastic bags, because some how plastic bags are bad for the environment. (Bread comes in plastic bags, milk comes in plastic, carrots come in plastic bags, meat comes in plastic wrap, etc, etc,) But some how the customer after buying all these items is not supposed to get a plastic bag to leave the store with LOL.

Self serve drives me nuts, and not being given a bag drives me nuts.

reminds me of this comic

I had one of the worst shopping experiences I’ve had in my life over a self checkout thing at a HD here in columbus once. I had about $70 worth of crap and rang it all up and went to pay, I had planned on using this old 1993 hundo I had saved back to do this little bit of work to the house. I always find old money neat and save it back till last, it was the only money I had on me.

Well the self checkout wouldnt take it even tho it had several marks on it from where it had been tested in the past with a pen. After trying to put it in several times and it continued to reject it the front end lady came over and looked at it and took it (away from there without saying anything, just walked away with my $100 bill) and a minute later a manager and a couple loss prevention dude’s came over and told me I was being detained while the cop’s were called for passing fake money (I knew for a fact this was a legit bill) all because their machine wouldnt accept it.

I told them I was doing nothing wrong, I would be more than happy to wait for the police (even tho it was a huge inconvenience and ridiculous that they wouldnt just check it any of the human method’s that are reliable and had been used forever) but that they better go ahead and get on the phone and get the district manager there right then too. The non-uniform wearing LP guy’s then proceded to get more offensive and try to tell me I would have to wait in their LP office. At this point (and once again being 1000% sure the money was real) I started to get more and more upset with the whole situation, I mean they were treating me as if I was a felon, I told them I was a licensed CCP holder and if they continued to attempt to physically approach me in their threatening manor there was going to be a very very large issue (I wasnt yelling or threatening to shoot people but I did let them know I wasnt going to be complying with their demand and they needed to return my money right away while we waited on the cop’s)

Well long story short the cop’s show up (quickly once they call back to add I had a weapon) look at the money for about 3 minutes while they ran my CHP (never take my gun, just asked me exactly where it was and said not to reach for it) and give me the money back and told them it was completely legit and that they should be thankful I remained calm cause it could of been a much worse situation had I gotten belligerent about how they were treating me. Anyway the district manager didnt show up (imagine that) but did return my phone call a few days later, told me they we’re simply following policy that if the machine rejects a bill they cant accept it, even if they pen it. I said “ok I understand following policy but was is policy to take the bill and walk away then come back threatening the customer with LP and cop’s?” to which he had no response, only said sorry. In the end I went back to the store while that store’s GM was in with my list and they sent an employee around to get everything on my list (cause I didnt have any other money that time when it all went down so I didnt get the shit on that trip). Know who they made go get the stuff for me- the front end manager that is the one that took the bill away in the first place.

Anyway to summarize- HD sucks balls, I still go there tho, they’re the only place with a battery recycling bin lol

Wow! What a story! Almost unbelievable. I had a college roommate that worked in a local department store chain as an "undercover loss-prevention detective" or whatever you call them. He had some interesting stories, but anyway he said they were strictly forbidden to approach anyone that they weren't absolutely certain had stolen something. I think they were extremely worried about getting sued.

I was always a Lowes person myself; that is until I found Home Depot had a better budget flashlight selection :) . Oh, and once Lowes ticked me off because they rented out an insulation blower that I had reserved. I left behind all I had intended to buy and went across the street to Home Depot.

A friend of mine was pressured into lending some money to a scummy relative. He first sprayed it all with a light coating of spray starch which causes the pens to say it’s fake. Scummy relative had all sorts of problems spending the money…

Same friend was actually tackled in a parking lot by a grocery store security pig guard. They thought he was scamming the self-checkout. He’s a bit deaf and couldn’t hear the guard telling him to stop. He wound up charging the guard with assault and battery and suing the pants off the store.

I love the Spray Starch idea!!!

That is nuts and awesome, deserves a +1

Did he get his money back (or at least repayment)?

My feelings exactly, they have pissed me off so many times I can’t count them. I too still go to HD, but only for MY convenience. This is one of the reasons I have stepped up my extreme bargain hunting.
RETRIBUTION |(
And I must admit it too, they have the BEST recycle bins.

BTW, here are some of my past complaints about HD. Over the last few years, some of them have been addressed.

1. It used to be the stores were dirty. Sometimes I would get dirtier picking up the house parts than I did installing them

2. If I needed help, there was none to be found, After all it IS a do it yourself store.

3. If I went to HD to pick up 5 common items, it was guaranteed that they would be out of stock on at least 1 of them.

4. They sell JUNK, just about everything they sell is substandard knock offs of the real deal. Even the so called “name brands” that they carry are really cheaper lines of the item, cheapened so that HD can appear to sell it for a little less.

5. They are not cheap. Most items, the smaller ticket items, are actually more than what it would be in the local hardware store. That is if you could still find one.

And I don’t like having to park and walk a quarter mile just to buy a screw.

Lately they have done a pretty good job of fixing 1 and 2 and 3, but #4 is the real killer.
As some of you know, I am in an HD almost every day, Lowes less so as they are not quite as plentiful around here. For my birthday and Christmas, my family always gives Lowes gift cards because they know that’s were my heart really lies.

Now that you got me going CK, I will now perform one last act of defiance towards HD.
I’m posting a Lowes deal on an HD thread!
Here it is, 4” locking pliers (Vise Grips), on clearance for 79 cents

BUT for me they scan for 49 cents  Maybe I do have the power.

Another thing I hated about HD, at least at the one near where I lived, was that you had to enter the store through a maze of stacked pesticide and fertilizer bags… with a few always spilling out their toxic brew.

Every self checkout machine is another person w/o a job

I don’t use them
