Home Floodlight Upgrade Options

Anybody have a recommendation as to upgrade my regular outdoor flood light bulds to bulbs with more lumens and more efficiency?

If it's on continuously all night, HID of some sort is a good way to go. Lots of lumens for a reasonable price. LED may save you a little money on operating costs, but typically costs more up front.

Wait, are you talking about regular bulbs like you'd use for indoor lamps? If so, get the Cree bulbs from Home Depot...unless your outdoor light fixture is closed, then the Cree bulb may overheat.

Im referring to regular outdoor screw-in flood lights.

They have outdoor rated LED bulbs.

That’s what I just installed out in my driveway.

Just read the package and make sure they are WET location rated, not just damp.

Anybody know of anything better than this or if this is a upgrade from a regular 75 watt bulb? I’m looking for more light output. I’m not even sure this outputs more light than a regular bulb.

It says light output is comparable to a 60-70 watt incan.

Also that price is pretty bad. You can walk into Home Depot and pick a brand name for that price.

I will say the sylvania 75w comparable I put up is much brighter than any 75w I have ever seen.

Do u know of a cree led option that does better? Seems like there would be awesome upgrade options but im having no luck.

I put in a 27watt Fluorescent style flood light shaped just like the typical 300/500 watt halogen ones. Got it on Amazon for about $20, seems it's not sold anymore, but it's similar to this model. I bought it because I wanted a light that automatic on/off (dusk/dawn) and couldn't stand my incandescent/halogen motion sensor lights coming on for every blade of grass that moved. Been running non-stop for 2+ years now without replacing a bulb. The one I linked above may suit you nicely if you are looking for tons of output (more than an LED floodlight will put out. Here's a lower output 18w model. My fixture was a little cheap, but it doesn't get moved or hit and has withstood the elements (I sealed under the plastic lens with silicone).

Also, how about one of those cheap chinese LED floodlights like these. I would expect you'd have to inspect and maybe fix a ground wire issue (many come with no ground wire connected I hear) and silicone the openings, but wouldn't these be huge output for a low price? I was planning on 1 or 2 30watt warm white ones for my backyard.

I prefer not to change the whole light assembly. I was hoping to be able to just buy some new upgraded bulbs. Do you or anyone have any experience with “mercury vapor bulbs?” Are bulbs like this a better option than regular incandescent flood light bulbs?
