Housing for 35mm optics/ triple LED boards

zemike has put his 35mm housing on indiegogo:

The 20mm housing I used to build a light for a friend was fantastic to use, I can imagine that this one will be even better. This + PilotPTK’s triple module = super awesome lighthead for $120 or so. If I wasn’t the recent recipient of a mini-lathe I’d be seriously considering this for my next light.

this could be sweet? How much is the PilotPTK’s triple module?

Thanks for the info

I think they’re $85-90 depending on LED bin if you buy it preassembled, but you’d be best to ask him direct. So it’d be that + switch + powercable/gland + mount + optic. Solder a few wires, drill a couple of holes for the switch and cable, screw everything together and you’re done. Couldn’t be much easier

I’m in for 2!

sweet, nice job!

This is a photo of a 20mm housing next to the 35mm prototype.

I have added the drawing in the Indiegogo gallery.

If you have any questions feel free to ask them here.

I’ve got a few of your 20mm housings, and they’re pretty nice. Good luck with the Indiegogo thing.

Welcome to the forum, zemike!

Hi Mike! Welcome to this forum! I have some questions: how thick is the pill for your stunning-looking housing ?

Do you think it can handle 30 Watt of heat? Another member here sells a 35 mm 3xXM-L module that looks like it’s made for your housing.

The pill is not yet final. It will have a 3mm firewall and a total height of 20mm. There will be enough space inside for a h3flex driver.

The smaller 20mm housing can handle 16W of power, so I think that this one will be OK for 30W

Project update:

  1. aluminium shell - trial run OK
  2. front ring & rear cover - trial run OK
  3. Viton o-rings - delivered - OK
  4. screws - delivered - OK
  5. front glass - waiting for delivery
  6. pill - design not yet finalized

Some photos are in the gallery here: http://www.indiegogo.com/easy2led?c=gallery
I will post there the pill drawing tomorrow.

Good news!
The AR glasses are ready and I have received a preliminary confirmation from the factory that it will be possible to make an additional tripod mount (1/4”–20) in the bottom of the housing. It will be possible to use this housing as video LED light!

zemike - I have two questions for you. What are you using for the lens (front glass)?

What type of aluminum is being used?

Welcome aboard!

AFAIK, there is only good quality multi coated AR front glass provided. Under that you can use TIR lenses like this http://www.ledil.com/material/Cute/Cute-3/20100208_pv_Cute3_lens_series_datasheet.pdf or some other because the pill can be screwed in to the needed distance from the front glass.
Zemike, am I right?
Don’t know about aluminium but black anodization won’t be of type III, afaik.

  1. 2mm hardened AR coated glass. Transmission should be around 96%
  2. 6061

True. The optic/reflector height can be anything from 0 to 30mm and the pill can be screwed at any desired depth.
Anodizing will be of the basic type.

What will happen now when the time to found your project has passed?

Just got my two 35mm housings yesterday, and they look great!

The only thing that worries are the screw holes for the retaining ring and rear cover, the outer walls seem a little too thin for my comfort. Gotta be careful not to screw them down too tightly for now…

great update MosesM, those look absolutely gorgeous. Lots of surface area for the mass and I like the superfine pitched threading on the adjustable pill. That’ll make getting the optic height right very easy. I can’t really think of an easier way for a DIYer to make a super bright genuine 2000lm+ light.
