Just curious because I do and quite a few a other men/sig-others I know do the same.
We have a deal, she brings home the killer health insurance from the hospital she nurses at and I cook the bacon
I do my thing for work as well but she does the heavy lifting and we are both cool with that, 25 years strong.
I prepare food for myself.
My other family members (that live with me) prepare food for themselves.
I usually just heat up my food.
On most days, I make and cook a grilled cheese sandwich with turkey for lunch.
So, I’m not much of a cook.
I do the cleaning. I kinda fell into this slot when I retired before her. Married for 53 years, as a logger, it was likely that I would check out before her working as a nurse. Both retired now. We still have the same deal going on but I notice that she has no hesitance to use every pot and utensil in the house to make a simple meal. She’s using me. I’m sure it’s intentional. Just trying to hang on as long as I can…
Didn’t want to get into that part, again we have a deal.
I just got done vaccing the downstairs and she does the upstairs.
I do the mowing, she does the weeding and yard art selection, Fung Shui etc.
Could never do the weeding as have had both knees fully replaced and although it has helped you really cannot get on your knees like before, one of the “little things” they fail to inform you about before getting pure hell put on your body.
Yeh, I’ve done shiite like 1-pan spaghetti. Yeah, pan.
Boil the noodles in the pan, drain, glop in jar sauce, flavor it up with salt, sugar, oregano, cayenne, whatever, to taste, keep cooking it to boil off leftover water, heat up the sauce, and even cook down the sauce to something “stickier” so it doesn’t just slide off the noodles.
One pan, one fork. Done.
Of course it takes me 27 bowls, forks, spatulae, dishes, etc., just to make tunyfish, so it evens out.
The wife and I split cooking duties. Well, it depends what we wanna have for dinner.
There are specific dishes that only I make.
It’s probably about 60% her 40%me.
I’m a fan of cleaning pots/pans/utensils as I am cooking, or shortly thereafter.
In 1982 I took my (to be) wife for the first to my little low-rent studio with a grandiose view over the city of Rotterdam. And I cooked her the best meal I could. I know it was not Michelin-star worthy, but …
Well, she is one of those persons who confuse rude with frank, so the comment I got would make Simon Cowell proud. That minute I made a note to myself I would never cook for her again. And I haven’t.
Me and Wifey have different dietary requirements (me - all the protein, her - must taste good) so we usually cook separately apart from weekend/“date evening dinner” meals and on those we are pretty much 50/50. Not much dish washing as we use a dishwasher, only the pans and knives need manual cleaning.
However we both don’t mind the other having a go on the other’s meals as long as we make sure it’s not a portion saved for next day work lunch etc
Broadly:
If it involves scratching in the dirt to make it grow, if it’s nourishment requiring preparation, if it can bleed or, if the ‘style police’ might take notice, it’s hers.
It it squeaks, rattles or leaks, sparks, requires assembly / dis-or-re-thereof, or, internally combusts, it’s mine.
I can feed us if I have to, but, I’ve also been known to burn water.
My wife and I split the cooking pretty evenly most of the time.
Some days it’s all me, somedays it’s all her.
However, if we are getting takeout i’m the pickup person 99.999% of the time.
“in every relationship, there’s one person who loads the dishwasher like a Scandinavian architect, and one who loads it like a raccoon on meth”
I load the dishwasher about 95% of the time.
I’m the “Scandinavian architect” and she’s the “Raccoon on meth”.
