I just bought a lathe yesterday (Holzmann ED400FD) and want to LEDize it.
So the first thing I want to do, is making some variable spots.
I wanted to make my own ones (with the lathe), but then I took one of my 3 SK98 and thought about it.
The zoomability is perfect for a lathe and the cooling is enough for ~5W. And they’re cheap.
So I will use 2 or 3 of them, just cut the back part like this:
But now the “problem”: I want to use something like a gooseneck - but those things are very expensive.
I remembered a picture here, where somebody made a “helping hand” out of coolant hose like this:
(Origin: http://www.ebay.de/itm/161360438643)
But: Will this stuff hold a lamp head?
I have to make some adapter and enhance the cooling, so the head will be probably as heavy as the hole light (without bat and tailcap: 83g).
I never have seen this cooling tubes but what about the standard goosenecks which are available for cheap?
I have seen them often as a usb extension, fan, led light for just few bucks?
My only experience with that kind of hose is on a Safety-Kleen parts washing sink. They’re usually more than stiff enough to support their own weight, I’m sure they could handle a flashlight head, but you’d be best served with a remote power source, though if its for a lathe I imagine tying the lights into the lathe’s power source was a given.
I have several decent quality ones (don’t know the quality of the one in the link) and they have no problem supporting the weight of a mic. As a bonus the ends are threaded and plenty of room through the gooseneck to run wires.
One “arm” holds an SK-68 fine, which is around 80g with cell. I think it could take a little more weight, but you would want to use deep screws into the nozzle end and avoid using the crocodile clip as I did as this is definitely the weakest part on my set (provided you have the other end secured; might help setting screws in epoxy for extra strength).
They came in individual bags.
Out of four, I got 3 good ones: fourth one came in two parts — the segments are ball-and-socket, I guess heat-shrunk, each one over the next one, and one socket had shrunk too small to capture the next piece.
Cyanoacrylate seems to have fixed that pair together, at least temporarily.
I wouldn’t trust my life to it, or anything heavy, but it’s a clever idea. Thanks Chloe.
Does anyone know where get segments of the various kinds of metal braided/coiled flexible tubing?
— it’s used in various sizes for those little LED USB lights, and for microphone stands, and ‘gooseneck’ lamps, and even BX electrical cable sheathing.
It’d be handy in a lot of ways, and the rotary cutters used for BX cable should cut the smaller versions.
THen all you need is a clamp-on end piece with some threads for attaching stuff.
And one LED Disc - 15W, 30 5630 Samsung LEDs, 100mm diameter
As you can see, the LED disc fits perfectly instead of the magnifying glass.
That the cables come out where the clamp is being screwed is not a problem, because I think, I won’t use the clamp and just screw the thing to some part of the machine. If I need the clamp, I will drill a small hole in the side for the cables.
The gooseneck can hold all of this, but not much more than that. But it stays in place, and that’s the most important thing.
But I will order 2 SK98 - there can’t be enough light
Thank you all guys!
@Itinifni:
That is indeed exactly what I am searching for.
I will wait how the coolant hose thing works.
