How to unscrew the head of a ThruNite TN-31

I finally removed the head of my TN-31, It was a royal PITA!

This is how I did it:

  • Bring water to a boil and turn off the heat.
  • Put TN-31 head inside a ziplock bag and dunk it in the hot water make sure the whole head is covered in water while keeping it dry inside the bag, Leave it aprox. 2-3 minutes in the hot water.
  • Wear gloves! The TN-31 head will be very hot when you get it out of the bag S)
  • Using strap wrenches apply force in counter clockwise rotation,If still stuck dunk it in water again!
  • When head starts to unscrew, be very careful with a small spring and steel ball, when they are free, they will try and make a run for it to the nearest hole or crevice not to be seen again! :open_mouth:
  • Clean the blue locktite stuff from the treads

Now you have easy access to upgrade the LED, install thicker wires (18awg) for more current and apply better thermal compound than stock.

I can’t believe the ammount of glue that was put on the head, looks like some kid had fun with it bigtime.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the tips! They really went to town with the thread locker… :expressionless:

Great tips. Not many dare to open TN31.

Thanx for this guide. I think this goes the same for the SupBeam K40 - I hope.
