Not to stir the pot— The last thing I’m worried about when a hurricane hits is whether I have charged cells — Of coarse I have adequate cells charged and power banks to charge cells — mainly I worry about all my crap outside , food and fuel for the generator — Clean water — Once the power is out for over 4-5 hrs there’s work to be done

So, not much has happened yet.
It’s the calm before the storm.
I just started charging four 21700 cells. :man_facepalming:
They were mostly charged already, and they’ll be for my family’s four Sofirn LT1S lanterns, in case the power goes out.
I think it’ll start raining later today, but it’ll get really bad tomorrow. :zipper_mouth_face:

Make sure things around your house are tied down, or locked up, properly so they don’t fly or float around and cause additional damage.

At least it looks like you will not get much wind. I went through three hurricanes in the New Orleans area (fortunately NOT Katrina). I went to Gulfport/Biloxi to help relief efforts after Camille. Big problems are usually caused by the wind and storm surge. At least you will not have to worry about those. Of course, too much rain too fast is not good. Hopefully your drainage is good.

Keep your batteries charged and phones. Maybe get some ice to keep the fridge cold longer. Store meds high and dry. If you have power banks, make sure they are charged. Bottled water… canned food, propane for the grill… Alkaleak cells…

We should have sustained winds of about 40 miles per hour, with gusts up to 70 miles per hour, which is pretty normal for storms in this area. :+1:
I’m most worried about flooding, though our property has never had that problem before.
A year’s worth of rain in 48 hours is a bit much.
The good news is that this storm is moving pretty quickly.
The storms that just hover over an area are the worst. :thinking:

True… but then you don’t get much rain in a normal year to begin with (NWS says about 5.5" average) … so in this case, that is good.

Is 5.5" for Palm Desert?
I couldn’t find that stat.
The ground here doesn’t absorb rainwater very well, so there will be a massive amount of flash flooding.
The thing is, though, I don’t know exactly where the flash flooding will occur. :+1:

Palm Desert annual rain
and came up with 4.5"
Still, it’s not very much compared to most of the world. :+1:

So far it’s been raining pretty hard, but nothing we can’t handle.
On yesterday’s local news, they said that the rain should stop at about midnight tonight.
As long as our property doesn’t flood, and the power doesn’t go out, I think we’ll be fine, though the worst is probably yet to come. :+1:

I heard that Coachilla Valley was predicted to get 3 to 4 inches. Of course the sensationalist media person warned that… “Although this doesn’t seem like much, it still could cause flash flooding”.
Hopefully not.

I now believe that our property is set up in such a way that it will never get flooded from a storm.
I didn’t realize that before.
I actually had trouble sleeping last night because I was worried about flooding.
So, the only real problem I think we could encounter is the power going out, which would not be the end of the world, but it would be kinda annoying. :slightly_smiling_face:

We had a couple of very short brownouts.
Because I have several UPS systems, I didn’t lose any data, but I wonder how long we’ll continue to have power. :thinking:

At 6:18PM, on the local news, they said that Palm Desert has received 3.77" of rain from Hilary.
They also said that the worst is over.
There are a bunch of trees that went down, and about a dozen streets in the Coachella Valley are flooded and closed off.
Of all the cities that they listed in the valley, Palm Desert got the most rain, though not by a whole lot.
Palm Desert had a peak gust of 42 miles per hour, which is not that big of a deal.
(We sometimes get wind storms with peak gusts above 70 miles per hour.)
