Just made a call to my former employer at Sailfish Point Golf Club at the tip of Hutchinson Island. A beautiful Jack Nicklaus designed course and club.
I talked to One of the sales associates and she told me that the EVACUATION was only for the barrier Islands and those living near the ocean. She lived in Stuart , Fla. ,8 miles inland and is braving the storm! She said the home is hurricane proof[hopefully], I think mostly made of cement.
I looked at the radar and the worst of it starts to hit around 11 pm tonight. I do not think a lot of the Eastern Florida communities are going to sleep well tonight.
God Bless our fellow Americans who will be affected by this Hurricane.
If she’s 8 miles inland what she has to worry about is down trees hitting the house and blocking the roads. And the power being out for a few days. If she’s not by a river or bayou or something she won’t flood
Accurate topographic information is essential for predicting storm surge damage and flooding. This data is an important component for the construction of evacuation maps based on hurricane storm surge models such as the NOAA SLOSH model. In many areas, the best existing topographic data consists of USGS contour maps produced at 5 to 10 foot contour intervals. The absolute vertical accuracy of these maps is also limited due to poor sampling and the analog techniques used to produce the contours. In low relief areas such as South Florida, this poor accuracy and resolution can result in large errors in the determination of flooded areas due to storms. As a result, the detail of most flood hazard maps is limited. Recent advances in microcomputers, laser ranging technology, and GPS positioning have resulted in the development of this compact and lightweight Airborne Laser Terrain Mapping (ALTM) system which can inexpensively acquire topographic data of unprecedented detail and accuracy. We present preliminary results of an ALTM survey of eastern Broward County, FL and the application of this data for the revision of storm surge evacuation maps.

I don’t think my rain gauge is going to be too accurate , it wasn’t designed to measure horizontal precipitation .
3” so far .
Stay safe!! We have a lot of customers in Florida, I sure hope it doesn’t get as bad as they say it might. Just watch everything… don’t let anything sneak up on you. TL
Where are you in Florida jacktheclipper ?
Never mind, looks like I missed what you had said above……… :person_facepalming:
My bad. Stay safe…………
I’m in the middle of Georgia and all the interstate highways are at a standstill, all hotel/motel rooms are booked. Hospitals along the coast are closed and were getting slammed with patients. All you who are staying, be safe and get inside something made of concrete.
Here is a free Kindle book for next time, I haven’t read it, and it won’t be free for long probably, but here it is.

Yeah, you just have to sign up for Amazon “Kindle Unlimited Service” which isn’t free. It’s $10 bucks a month.
Keep safe guys, stay vigilant, and best of luck! Keep strong! :+1:

Watching on CNN honestly it does not look that bad on TV. The storm has lost a lot of strength.
I hope every one is okay! Now would be a good time to have a boat
I guess its not so much the wind its more the storm surges but yous have barriers for that? Here we do not! Good chance if you live near a river or lake it will flood even if it is inland a fare way so best leave or at least prepare.
At least you have a legit reason to use all your flashlights!
Looks like it’s weaker this morning but anything can happen.
No hotel rooms are left in SC even here in the extreme western parts of the state, but room is still available in shelters. Certain shelters allow pets but they must be in cages. Folks with shortwave radios that have SSB capability can listen on 14.325 MHz and 7.268MHz to real-time Ham and marine radio reports.
Best wishes for the coastal folks,
Phil
